\"Ti-Ahwaga<\/a>One of the most beloved stories in American literature will come to life Oct. 2, as \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d debuts at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center, 42 Delphine St. in Owego. The show will run for three consecutive weekends, Oct. 2-4, 9-11 and 16-18; Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

Read by generations of adults and high school students, Harper Lee\u2019s classic novel was first published in 1960 and its tale of racial injustice in a small Alabama town made an indelible impact on a nation conflicted by race relations. The 1962 film adaptation won the Best Actor Academy Award for Gregory Peck in his role as attorney Atticus Finch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always enjoyed stories about underdogs, and when I read the stage adaptation, I thought \u2018That\u2019s it \u2013 that\u2019s the next project I\u2019m going to propose,\u2019\u201d said Todd E. Smith, the play\u2019s director. The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players (TCP) Board accepted Smith\u2019s proposal for the 2015-16 season, and coincidentally, a short time later HarperCollins Publishers announced it would release Lee\u2019s second novel, a prequel to \u201cMockingbird\u201d titled \u201cGo Set a Watchman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following mixed reviews for \u201cGo Set a Watchman,\u201d Smith asked the play\u2019s cast of 18 actors to avoid reading it, despite the obvious connection to the stage adaptation of \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird,\u201d which was written by Christopher Sergel. \u201cI told them I wanted to be true to the original story,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI was afraid reading \u2018Watchman\u2019 now would fog their interpretation of the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ti-Ahwaga\u2019s cast includes Greg Fusare (Atticus), Nadia Murphy (Scout), Adam Ackerman (Jem), John-Paul Kidney (Dill), Adara Alston (Calpurnia), Irv Cook (Bob Ewell), Kristina Jackson (Mayella Ewell), Chris Nickerson (the prosecutor) and Isaac Quattlebaum (Tom Robinson).<\/p>\n

Also featured are Diane Arbes (Miss Maudie), Carolyn Christy-Boyden (Mrs. Dubose), Jamie Cornell (Judge Taylor), Foster Daniels (Rev. Sykes), Linda Fenescey (Miss Stephanie), Andrew Hafer (Boo Radley), Mike Noone (Mr. Cunningham), Kenneth Smith (the court clerk) and Yale Williams (Sheriff Tate).<\/p>\n
