It\u2019s a long-standing source of amusement among “Star Trek” fans: crew wearing red uniforms \u2013 the \u2018redshirts\u2019 \u2013 rarely lived long and prospered, many falling victim to a speedy on-screen demise during the original series\u2019 three seasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t something I was really conscious of when filming,\u201d said Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov. \u201cSomeone had to bite the bullet to indicate the crew was in danger, so it was usually the red-shirted security or engineering guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste Yarnall was one of five landing party crew dressed in red who appeared in the second season episode, \u201cThe Apple.\u201d Four never survived to the episode\u2019s end credits.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t realize at the time that wearing a red uniform could be so dangerous,\u201d joked Yarnall, who played Yeoman Martha Landon. \u201cBut fans tell me they didn\u2019t usually bump off \u2018red skirts,\u2019 just the \u2018redshirts,\u2019 so I survived!\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she was the episode\u2019s love interest for Koenig\u2019s Chekov, her most vivid memories involve William Shatner.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was hysterical,\u201d she recalled. \u201cBill and Leonard (Nimoy) had a great time rhyming on what the other would say and the banter back and forth between them was really wonderful, with Leonard staying in character the whole time. When you\u2019re a guest star you walk into what is essentially a family and you\u2019re the new person, but Bill made me feel very comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Yarnall\u2019s character beat the \u2018redshirt\u2019 odds, Julie Cobb\u2019s wasn\u2019t so lucky.<\/p>\n

Cobb co-starred in \u201cBy Any Other Name\u201d as Yeoman Leslie Thompson, and was dispatched 15 minutes into the episode after aliens reduced her and another \u2018redshirt\u2019 to geometric blocks representing their condensed \u201cessence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alien leader, played by Warren Stevens, crumbles one of the blocks and I\u2019m history,\u201d laughed Cobb. \u201cI had no clue at the time about the redshirt joke, I was too busy remembering my lines and hitting my marks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from one TV commercial, \u201cStar Trek\u201d was Cobb\u2019s first acting job.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing the baby on the show, I was absolutely terrified,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut the director and cast couldn\u2019t have been nicer, especially Bill. He had worked with my father in \u2018The Brothers Karamazov\u2019 a decade earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cobb\u2019s father, the highly respected actor Lee J. Cobb, was a veteran of over 70 films including \u201cOn the Waterfront\u201d and \u201c12 Angry Men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very supportive when I started acting, and we worked together on one of his last TV roles, an episode of Gunsmoke,\u201d recalled Cobb. He also passed on valuable advice for managing nerves.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe asked me a very profound question: \u2018How do you know it\u2019s not excitement?\u2019 Well, in future I just told myself \u2018I\u2019m excited to have this role!\u2019 and never felt nervous again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koenig and Cobb are confirmed guests for the Aug. 6-9 Creation Entertainment “Star Trek” convention in Las Vegas (see www.creationent.com<\/a>). Yarnall, who attended her first convention in 1999, has been slowed by illness recently, but is planning to join the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just finished my sixth round of chemotherapy and right now I\u2019m feeling very optimistic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

After her diagnosis of ovarian cancer last year, she was touched by the response of “Star Trek” fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI set up a gofundme account to help pay for medical expenses and the fans posted links to it, contributed, and shared words of support. But isn\u2019t that always the way \u2013 regular folks stepping forward to help others? I\u2019m honored and humbled by that.\u201d (See www.gofundme.com\/kvo9xs.)<\/p>\n

Cobb, too, is looking forward to the convention but once again, is the rookie.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be my first ‘Star Trek’ convention,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to expect, but I\u2019m excited, not nervous!\u201d<\/p>\n

Koenig, a convention veteran, was Creation Entertainment\u2019s first guest back in the \u201970s. He has also recently resurrected his iconic character \u2013 now Admiral Chekov \u2013 in the new independent movie, \u201cStar Trek: Renegades\u201d and will attend the official premier on Aug. 1, at Los Angeles\u2019 Crest Theater.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve squeezed that grape pretty thin now, there\u2019s not much juice left in it,\u201d said Koenig of his Chekov character. “But it was fun working on this production.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for those anxious over Chekov\u2019s fate in \u201cRenegades,\u201d rest assured that Walter\u2019s uniform isn\u2019t red.<\/p>\n
