Create your own Pine Needle Basket at a workshop scheduled for July 25 in Newark Valley.<\/p><\/div>\n

On July 25, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., a Pine Needle Basketry workshop will take place at the Bement-Billings Farmstead located on Route 38 in Newark Valley. To register by July 21, call Leslie at 642-5412.<\/p>\n

Participants learn history and basics while weaving a small piece. There will be beautiful examples. Guests are asked to bring scissors.<\/p>\n

Carol Lukovich will instruct the class. The cost is $10, and $8 for Newark Valley Historical Society members. Visit www.nvhistory.org<\/a> to learn more.<\/p>\n

Baskets continue to be created worldwide of materials found in nature. Human ingenuity and creativity brings us this folk art craft of pine needle basket making. Many years ago, the instructor\u2019s mother looked at her deck covered with pine needles and began a 30-year journey into weaving, which Carol continues today. The mother and daughter have produced an instruction book on the art form. Raffia is often used to bind the coils together and, sinew, wax linen, carpet thread and crochet thread are also used. Carol individualizes her coil baskets with imprinted pottery pieces forming the bottom center.<\/p>\n
