Twelve boys and girls from Tioga, Spencer Van-Etten, and surrounding areas, ages nine to 14, were named local\u00a0champions of the 2015 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the\u00a0right to compete at the district level.\u00a0Blessed Trinity Council #251\u00a0in\u00a0Waverly\/Owego sponsored the local competition at Tioga Central High School.\u00a0All youngsters ages nine to 14 were eligible to participate.<\/p>\n

The event was held in memory of longtime youth basketball coach Dan Manwaring.\u00a0Organizers\u00a0christened the event the 1st Annual Dan Manwaring Free Throw Championship. Forty-eight contestants participated and over $400 was raised for the Manwaring family through tee shirt sales.<\/p>\n

Nine-year-old champions were\u00a0Kendra Katchuk\u00a0in the girls\u2019 bracket and Nate Smith\u00a0in the boys\u2019.\u00a0Abagail Foley was the10-year-old girls\u2019 champion and Taylor King was the winner of the 10-year-old boys\u2019 division. In the 11-year-olds\u2019 bracket, Arianna Manwaring was the girls\u2019 champion and Elliott Walter was the boys\u2019 champion. Twelve-year-old winners in the girls\u2019 and boys\u2019 divisions were Madison Howey and Jacob Armstrong respectively.<\/p>\n

The 13-year-old girls\u2019 division was won by Emily Polo Rankin and the boys\u2019 by Samuel Taylor. Fourteen-year-old champions were Lauren Allen in the girls\u2019 bracket and Nick Klossner in the boys\u2019.<\/p>\n

Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contests.\u00a0Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.\u00a0Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held on Feb. 15\u00a0in<\/p>\n
