Throughout the 1930s, Shirley Temple sang and danced her way into the hearts of depression-weary movie audiences. A decade later, adorable Margaret O\u2019Brien endeared herself to millions seeking Hollywood diversions as World War II came and went.<\/p>\n

In acknowledgement of her influence on other young actors, O\u2019Brien was presented with the Actors Fund Shirley Temple Award on Dec. 4. On Dec. 8, she will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern California Motion Picture Council.<\/p>\n

Far from retired at 77, this year O\u2019Brien completed work on a new film version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, due for release next spring (see http:\/\/socalemc.com\/jekyllhyde\/?p=194<\/a>), which also features Mickey Rooney.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s called the \u2018Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,\u2019\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cI\u2019ll always cherish this movie because it\u2019s the last film Mickey made.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien\u2019s connection to Rooney goes back to the 1941 film \u201cBabes on Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my first movie when I was only three years old,\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cMickey and I didn\u2019t have any scenes together, but I can still remember him walking by and saying \u2018Hello, what a cute little girl!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

An avid reader as a child, O\u2019Brien was thrilled to tackle roles based on the books she grew up with \u2013 \u201cLittle Women,\u201d \u201cJane Eyre,\u201d and \u201cThe Secret Garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many children get to play a character from their favorite books?\u201d asked O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n

Starring in almost 20 films throughout the 1940s, little Margaret astonished audiences with a display of adult emotions though she was not yet even a teenager.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think movie kids are just a little more mature in some ways,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew it was a job, not playacting, and that others depended on me to know my lines. I took my work very seriously.<\/p>\n

In her teen years, O\u2019Brien\u2019s cuteness blossomed into youthful beauty. At 19, a stunning photo was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. However, throughout the \u201850s, she only appeared in three feature films including the horse racing drama \u201cGlory.\u201d\u00a0But, she says, it wasn\u2019t because her \u2018cuteness factor\u2019 had evaporated.<\/p>\n

\u201cMovie contracts were ending and television came along,\u201d she explained. \u201cMy mother thought I should get into television, so I worked on many great shows from that period.\u201d<\/p>\n

For much of her adult life, O\u2019Brien has also been committed to charitable causes, including AIDS awareness and programs that assist actors.<\/p>\n

And while she considers herself conservative, O\u2019Brien dresses flamboyantly and still sports a nose piecing acquired some years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love creative fashion and hunting for unusual items to make jewelry from. That\u2019s about as offbeat as I get!\u201d she said. \u201cMy mother raised me to be pretty well-grounded, so I never had the problems that a lot of child actors faced. Acting has been a wonderful career, and still is.\u201d<\/p>\n
