It\u2019s hard to find a bad photograph of silver screen beauty Hedy Lamarr, who was born 100 years ago this month.<\/p>\n

Although only appearing in some two dozen Hollywood productions, starting with \u201cAlgiers\u201d in 1938 and ending just 20 years later with \u201cThe Female Animal,\u201d Lamarr\u2019s picture-perfect image dazzled devoted admirers who christened her \u201cthe most beautiful woman in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine being so well-known for your looks all your life, then having to face growing old,\u201d said her daughter, Denise Loder-DeLuca, who runs the website, hedylamarr.com.\u00a0\u201cFor most women it\u2019s tough, but to be known as the most beautiful woman in the world \u2013 that\u2019s a lot of pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lamarr\u2019s career began in Europe where she appeared in films as Hedwig Kiesler, her Austrian birth name. After moving to Hollywood, her stunning screen persona and soft accent were captivating. Just ask Victor Mature\u2019s character in \u201cSamson and Delilah\u201d (1949) who was enslaved \u2013 and shaved \u2013 by her allure!<\/p>\n

Lamarr\u2019s beauty was truly a scene stealer \u2013 no easy task when working alongside screen legends Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable in 1940\u2019s \u201cBoom Town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t come on until half way through \u2018Boom Town\u2019 and when she does, the whole film picks up,\u201d said Loder-DeLuca.<\/p>\n

In fact, actresses of the day tried to copy Lamarr\u2019s look by parting their hair down the middle.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only actresses, a lot of other women too,\u201d noted Loder-DeLuca. \u201cBut that\u2019s not uncommon. Like Jennifer Aniston \u2013 everyone wanted her haircut when she was on \u2018Friends.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Even in her later years, Lamarr remained stylish.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were once out in New York when she was in her late 70s and she was wearing a scarf, sunglasses, cool jeans, and a beautiful coat,\u201d her daughter recalled. \u201cPeople didn\u2019t know who she was, but they would come up and ask, \u2018Who are you? You must be somebody!\u2019 She just had a natural flare about her that people noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lamarr moved to Florida late in life, but it wasn\u2019t until after she died in 2000 that a little-known aspect of her life surfaced.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was young, she would tell us about this anti-missile device she had invented,\u201d said Loder-DeLuca. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019d say, \u2018Yeah, right mom!\u2019 like any kid probably would. Then when I was an adult, a professor sent me a copy of a science magazine that had her on the cover and had an article about what she had done. So I called her and said, \u2018So you really did invent that!\u2019 She said, \u2018I\u2019ve been telling you that for years!\u2019 When she died, it was really the first time the press had talked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After her move to America, Lamarr had befriended American musician George Antheil in 1940 and both shared a passionate dislike of Hitler and Mussolini\u2019s goal of world domination. The unlikely partnering of an actress and a composer yielded a US patent for a \u201cSecret Communication System\u201d which the pair believed could help make US guided munitions immune from enemy jamming by employing a system of constantly changing radio frequencies, known as frequency hopping.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe came up with the idea, and George Antheil figured out how to do it,\u201d explained Loder-DeLuca. \u201cShe was very smart and had learned a lot about weapons from her first husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Lamarr and Antheil failed to renew their patent losing the potential to make a fortune when their idea was later applied to commercial radio and became the basis for spread-spectrum broadcast communications technologies used today is such familiar applications as wireless Internet, cell phones, and defense satellites.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a book of famous inventors on my coffee table,\u201d Loder-DeLuca said. \u201cThey are mostly elderly men; then there\u2019s my glamorous mother among them!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had more than just beauty,\u201d she added. \u201cShe had class, intelligence, and charm, and the camera loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n
