Many area organizations have participated in raising money to educate and increase knowledge and awareness about breast cancer during the month of October, which is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.<\/p>\n

Several Apalachin Youth Football League (AYFL) players, cheerleaders and parents\/coaches, as well as the local community, have participated in The Styling Corner\u2019s \u201cGet Pink\u2019d\u201d event held at their location at 127 Spencer Ave. in Owego, N.Y. For $10, stylists at The Styling Corner offered pink hair extensions, with proceeds benefiting the \u201cMaking Strides Against Breast Cancer\u201d walk, part of the American Cancer Society\u2019s breast cancer awareness campaign.\u00a0 A total of $1,364.00 was raised by AYFL, with the help of the talented stylists and free time given at The Styling Corner.<\/p>\n

Jeana Hoyt, a breast cancer survivor who was first diagnosed in 2011, formed the team \u201cTreasured Chests\u201d for the Making Strides walk. Several family members of AYFL participated with Hoyt in the Oct. 18 walk, including two other breast cancer survivors. A total of $3,700 was raised, which included the fundraiser money from the Get Pink\u2019d event at The Styling Corner. Hoyt stated on her Treasured Chests team page, \u201cSomeday I hope there will be no need for this walk. But, for now, let\u2019s do all we can to help those dealing with breast cancer, and fund research to find a cure.\u201d<\/p>\n

While supplies last, The Styling Corner will continue to offer pink hair extensions for $10, with remaining proceeds going to other local breast cancer organizations. Lori Jackson, of The Styling Corner shared, \u201cOver 100 people have received pink hair extensions so far in our Get Pink\u2019d event.\u201d Jackson suggested customers call ahead for an appointment at (607) 687-5525, however walk-ins are welcomed.<\/p>\n

AYFL coaches painted the breast cancer awareness symbol on the football field at Stephens Memorial Park, the home of the Raiders, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, Apalachin, N.Y for the Oct. 19 game, a championship playoff game between AYFL and OJFL. Pink signs were hung around the edges of the field with the names and numbers of players, another unique way to show support of breast cancer awareness month.<\/p>\n

In a display of sportsmanship at the end of the game, the Owego and Apalachin teams, along with cheerleaders, joined together for a group gathering and photo, donning pink socks and other pink accessories, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With another successful season completed by all of the \u201cRaider Nation\u201d teams, the 11 and 12 year old Raiders are gearing up for the Super Bowl this weekend.<\/p>\n
