Photo provided by Kathy Garver.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Well-known for her role as \u2018Cissy\u2019 in the \u201860s sitcom \u201cFamily Affair,\u201d Kathy Garver began her film career a decade earlier as a child actor with appearances in three 1950s classic movies, \u201cThe Night of the Hunter,\u201d \u201cThe Bad Seed,\u201d and \u201cThe Ten Commandments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This month she returns to the big screen in \u201cMom, Murder &amp; Me,\u201d a film written and directed by Heather Donnell and part of this year\u2019s California Independent Film Festival Association. The world premiere will be held at the Orinda Theater, Orinda, Calif., on Sept. 14 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mommurderandme.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.mommurderandme.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The film, she says, is also a \u201cfamily affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fun movie and I play the \u2018Mom\u2019 who helps her daughter (Sarah Klaren) investigate a possible murder,\u201d said Garver from her home in San Francisco.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a comedy-mystery and actually based on a true story that happened to the writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Garver\u2019s earliest films was also based on a true story \u2013 according to the Christian faith \u2013 and was one of Hollywood\u2019s greatest Golden Age epics: \u201cThe Ten Commandments\u201d (1956).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hired as an extra for the scene where all the slaves are leaving during the Exodus,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next decade, Garver concentrated on TV roles and was 20 when hired for \u201cFamily Affair\u201d which ran for five seasons (see www.kathygarver.com).<\/p>\n<p>She says Brian Keith, who played her uncle, was great to work with and the two remained friends until his death from suicide in 1997. However his mood changed throughout the series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrian was a lot of different personalities during the show. He was married to Judy Landon at the beginning, but she was very high society. He was much more down to earth and didn\u2019t like all that hoopla, and they eventually divorced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keith filmed \u201cKrakatoa: East of Java\u201d (1969) while still working on \u201cFamily Affair,\u201d and met actress Victoria Young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe became much happier then and they eventually married,\u201d said Garver.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to acting, Garver published \u201cA Family Affair Cookbook\u201d in 2009 and plans to release another book, \u201cSurviving Cissy,\u201d in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Having survived the often difficult years as a child actor and now progressed to parental roles, as in \u201cMom, Murder &amp; Me,\u201d Garver is also planning a compendium of former child star actors from the &#8217;50s, &#8217;60s, and &#8217;70s for 2016, the 50th anniversary of \u201cFamily Affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost two wonderful former child stars in the past year \u2013 Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney \u2013 so I think that book will be dedicated to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Thomas teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., with features, columns, and interviews in over 400 magazines and newspapers.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well-known for her role as \u2018Cissy\u2019 in the \u201860s sitcom \u201cFamily Affair,\u201d Kathy Garver began her film career a decade earlier as a child actor&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":36746,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-36745","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-arts-living"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
