I think the \u201857 Ford was both better looking and is rarer these days. What\u2019s your opinion? Also, how many cars have you owned in your days? Which car do you miss the most? Lloyd Whitmer, New York, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A: Lloyd, I\u2019ve been answering questions from car enthusiasts for way too long to make a big mistake like taking sides in a Ford versus Chevy question. However, I will admit that the \u201857 Ford is indeed a much rarer breed these days than a \u201857 Chevy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Personally, I\u2019ve always owned GM, AMC, or MOPAR vehicles, and not counting my \u201959 Edsel that I sold, I haven\u2019t yet owned a strictly Ford car, nor a Mercury. (Chevrolet)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My past owned vehicles (in order of owning them) include a \u201953 Dodge Red Ram 241 Hemi, \u201863 Chevy Impala 283, \u201861 Plymouth Savoy Slant Six, \u201867 Plymouth GTX 440, \u201864 VW Beetle, \u201865 GTO Convertible 389 Tri Power, \u201968 Camaro SS\/RS 396\/375, \u201851 Buick Special, \u201873 Dodge Ram pickup, \u201873 Vega GT, \u201874 AMC Hornet X, \u201876 AMC Gremlin X, \u201879 AMC Spirit, \u201873 Cadillac Sedan Deville, \u201875 Cadillac Coupe Deville, \u201874 Dodge Club Cab, \u201874 AMC Matador, \u201879 Chevelle Malibu Wagon, \u201883 Buick Park Avenue, \u201886 Dodge Club Van, \u201889 Pontiac Bonneville, \u201894 Chrysler LHS, \u201894 Pontiac Trans Am, \u201896 Dodge Grand Caravan, \u201872 Dodge Challenger, \u201899 Pontiac Grand Am, \u201808 Pontiac G6, \u201898 Camaro Z28, 08 GMC Envoy, and a \u201959 Edsel Ranger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My big mistakes? Selling the \u201868 Camaro, \u201867 GTX, \u201865 GTO, and \u201851 Buick, the latter had only 34,000 original miles and a perfect interior. I still have the \u201894 Trans Am, \u201872 Challenger, \u201898 Camaro, and \u201908 GMC. The car I miss the most is my \u201867 GTX, a \u201cB5 Blue\u201d rocket, with the \u201968 Camaro, also finished in bright blue, 396\/375 a close second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back to the 1957 Ford and Chevy. I really feel the \u201957 Ford is equal to the \u201957 Chevy in styling, but the \u201957 Chevy, with the 283 V8 Fuel Injected option or the highly popular Nomad Station Wagon, is far ahead of the \u201957 Ford in collector demand and values. That\u2019s a proven fact, but it still doesn\u2019t mean the \u201957 Ford isn\u2019t desirable. Ford offered novelty with the hardtop convertible, which ran from \u201957 through \u201859, and its \u201857 Ranchero, which was two years ahead of the El Camino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019d love to own one of each of the 1957 models, in any shape or style. I have been driving a 2006 Chevy HHR for 18 years. My HHR is golden brown with faux wood siding representing a bygone woody era. I&#8217;ve had innumerable people reacting to the car through the years, but it appears we are reaching the end of the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the past seven years, I&#8217;ve had a new 90-g battery installed and an electric steering column that is very temperamental and intermittently functioning. In November, the rambling wreck somehow passed inspection along with new brake pads, fluid, rotor, and caliper. In January, the starter was replaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My vehicle has become a cottage industry for repair shops. During the HHR&#8217;s lifespan, I have assiduously worked to keep the exterior rust-free.&nbsp; However, the undercarriage is so depleted and rotted that technicians will not place the car on a lift.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My beloved Chevy HHR will not pass inspection in November, and I\u2019m feeling a dire sense of separation anxiety. Greg, what is my next step? Is there no stay of execution? It only has 228,000 miles. Trade in value? Of note, the Chevrolet HHR was produced from 2005 to 2011, with model years spanning 2006 to 2011. Concerning your rust, once it rots the undercarriage, there\u2019s not much you can do, but you sure got significant use from your HHR, and when you get a new vehicle, look for the dealers that will give \u201cx amount\u201d of dollars for any trade-in (gimmick or not). &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As for the &#8220;faux woody&#8221; styling, it was available as an aftermarket kit rather than a factory option. These kits, like the ones from Woody Wagoon, allowed owners to give their HHR a retro wood-paneled look reminiscent of classic wagons.
