Child falls out of minibus traveling down interstate near Kirkwood

On Dec. 14, 2019 New York State Police at Binghamton were dispatched to a report of a child that fell out of a minibus on Interstate 81 southbound near Kirkwood.  The child has been transported to a local hospital.

Broome County 911 received the call at approximately 5:03 p.m. Troopers, the Kirkwood Fire Company, Five Mile Point Fire Company, Great Bend Hose Company 1 (Pennsylvania), and Broome County Ambulance quickly responded to the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that two minibuses with several members from an Amish community from Lancaster, Pa. were traveling south on Interstate 81.

According to police, a three-year-old child was in the rear area of the first bus with other children when he leaned on an emergency window. The emergency window opened and the child fell out onto the Interstate near mile marker 2 in Kirkwood.

The police reported that the buses immediately turned around, traveling northbound then back southbound, and located the child running along the shoulder of the Interstate. The child did have lacerations, bumps and bruises, but was alert and crying at the scene.

He was transported to Wilson Medical Center. The investigation continues.
