Readers’ Column for the week of December 1, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

This is for Mr. Castellucci and our Highway Supervisor; you both need to do the jobs to which you were elected. The bridge on Long Creek Road and the detour are now gone. Why not build a wooden bridge so Long Creek can be traveled both ways. These structures can be built in the winter, as we know it’s too late to put down blacktop. Put a weight limit on it, we now have to travel Chestnut Ridge and Montrose Turnpike. The Turnpike has been known to close in the wintertime because of drifting. Chestnut Ridge is a very steep hill. Just remember that you are elected to your jobs, we on Long Creek will remember.

Another joke, why are we throwing good money after bad? Broome County Airport is a joke, very under used. People are flying out of Syracuse and Elmira over Broome County. Now Brindisi, Schumer, and Gillibrand want renovations to prevent collisions on the runways. Now I ask you, when have two planes every collided on that runway? Brindisi is a joke, where are all his campaign promises? He was supposed to be going after Spectrum, I’ve seen nothing on that other than my Spectrum bill in the mail the other day going through the roof. Vote them all out come next November. Put Claudia Tenney back in office where you’ll get things done.

To all the votes that contribute to the national viewpoints, has the boundary of acceptable conduct been stretched so far that nasty name-calling has become the norm? Please folks, if you have an opinion, state it, using thought provoking intelligent arguments; but keep the insults to yourself. Please be civil. The Pennysaver has the right to reject your comments and perhaps they should be using that power more often.

This is to the person that wanted a tree limb cut. There is a tree service called Timber Sky Tree Service, (570) 395-0226; Klees Tree Service in Apalachin, 625-4209; and there is a Budget Tree service, 642-8210. I hope this is helpful.

To the person looking for a dog control officer in the town of Owego, did you see the two articles on page 37 of the Owego Pennysaver on Nov. 24, 2019 regarding animal cruelty? You can call the New York State Police or Tompkins County SPCA for help.

~

Several years ago Cornell offered a million dollars a piece for five math problems, half of one of them have been solved and it’s called Sep Retics Separation and this is solved under the Arrows Separation. This information is used to determine the outcome of elections in New York State. That’s how the democrats get elected so often. I’m sure with Bloomberg and his money, this is what’s going on. It needs to be looked into.

~

Call Tony at Tri Town and Tree Service in Candor, 659-3821. He’s done several projects for me, he does really good work and I consider his prices to be reasonable.

I need replacement bulbs for the candles I have in my window. Looked everywhere and could not find them until a lady at Rite Aid told me to go to Horns True Value, they have everything. I went there and they had them and stocked up on them!

~

I’m calling about the Newark Valley town crier calling about junk cars and trash. Trash I can’t see, but I live in a different county with strict regulations and I did find out the law was amended in 2013 for car dealers, scrap yards, salvage yards and classic cars and you are allowed two vehicles on your property that are unlicensed. You can’t tear them apart but you can have them on your property as well as if you have any kind of farm, you are allowed to have a truck unlicensed to be used on the property.

I am in my 50’s and a very reliable worker and I have worked for over 40 years. I am currently unemployed due to plant closings. I haven’t been able to get an interview. I’m wondering, is this because of my age?

~

I love the NASCAR Association, it’s nice to see them and they show so much respect for our nation. A prayer is said, the National Anthem is sung, they salute the flag, and they take their hats off. Not many organizations do that anymore.

I read a Letter to the Editor in the Pennysaver talking about how well the Owego Apalachin students are doing. It makes me laugh. They’re doing so well because teachers don’t teach anything anymore. They spend the entire year getting these kids ready to take these tests. You ask the average student these days to write something in cursive. They don’t know what cursive writing is. They don’t know anything about their country. They can’t name the 50 states, any of the capitals; they don’t know the president, the vice president. They are not learning anything except how to take these tests. The really sad part, when it becomes test day because testing is now stressful, they can opt out. So they just have the smartest kids taking the tests and that’s what their levels are based on, how well the smart kids do. It’s not an average or a true calling of what the kids are learning. If there are 10 kids in a class, two of them, maybe only one, take the test! So, I’m sorry, Owego Apalachin is doing a really bad job of teaching our kids anything except how to take the test and how to opt out of tests.

This is about the protests at SUNY Binghamton. It seems that both people acted disgraceful. They want someone agreeing with their own viewpoints but they don’t want anybody disagreeing with them. They are the ones that talk about intolerance, yet they are the ones that are intolerant. Another thing, that rebel rouser George Soros should be locked up. I don’t care whether he’s rich or not he can still go to jail.

I received a parking ticket last Sunday during the Elks Club’s holiday Christmas event. I parked on Front Street where I received a ticket. The whole town was full of traffic, cars even lined up on Church Street to park. We often hear shop Owego; support your local merchants. Though the officer had a right to give me a ticket, I think of all the times I overlooked things and understood certain situations.

I would just like to thank all the good neighbors on Park Street in Spencer for taking me to the hospital when I had surgery for my shoulder, and taking me again to the doctor when I was not feeling well. Thank you very much, and God Bless.

~

Why does a Town Board such as Spencer feel that they have to endorse a private landowner or group LLC to go ahead with fracking when the State has a moratorium? Their endorsement does not reflect the people. Are they saying that they will share the responsibility if there is a disaster and a lawsuit? This is just political showboating. By the way, the board member is Leaseholders and there is probably a conflict of interest.

Here is a piece of nostalgia for those of you who can remember when you could make a living from 30 to 50 milking cows. “Sometimes the cottony clouds of morning would clump together and transform into the ominous thunderheads of afternoon. The flicker of lighting and the rumble of thunder would announce that Thor was swinging his mighty hammer against his anvil in the sky. The air would become so thick and oppressive that it felt more like a slurry than a gas. A sweeping wall of rain would chase the baling crew from the field. The men would gather in the doorway of our barn, smoking and swapping jokes as fat raindrops exploded against the roof and the hissing downpour cooled and cleanses the sweltering summer air. I clearly recall the smells of that old barn. There was the musk of sweaty men mingled with the fragrance of freshly baled alfalfa. The essence of cow manure mixed with the incense of cigarette smoke and the aroma of axle grease. It was wonderful.” From Dear County Agent Guy by Jerry Nelson, pg. 58.

If you live in a Village, have close neighbors, no public water or sewer, a shallow well, a septic system, your well could be contaminated. Give yourself a Christmas gift. Have your septic system pumped and your well tested. There are contaminated wells out there! Your health can depend on it.

This week’s challenge for our DA; explain why it’s acceptable for the jury to consult with the defendant on how the defendant’s trial will be conducted.

In 2016 the OACSD Board of Education made a tiny investment of about $30,000 (?) or 6/100th of 1 percent (rounding error) of the budget and reaped huge returns. In the 2nd round search for a new Superintendent the salary was sweetened. Superintendent Green resulted. In the September Newsletter, and consistent with NYS ED metrics, OACSD crowed about improved academic performance. OACSD accomplished this in three years and earned bragging rights! THANK YOU to those who CAN DO. This was value-add of leadership and management by staff. Thirteen years of excessive teacher salaries show zero correlation to academic proficiency in Math and English Language skills. Actually it shows the opposite. The caterwauling for more taxes served as an excuse for poor performance. Mr. Green’s predecessor’s business model was more money for annually fewer resources for the children and outstanding mediocracy. This academic improvement fully debunks the premise (excuse) that our children’s low potential and IQ accounts for the mediocre performance. Our demographics are 2nd to Vestal whose academic performance gives OACSD a lot room for greater improvement. Merit pay for those who “can do” seems appropriate. Improving finances for the children, like academic performance, is picking low hanging fruit. Nationally, NYS has the highest cost teacher compensation, OACSD the highest in the Southern, and we have a cost of living below the national average; what’s the problem accepting the challenge? Answer, it forces public discussion and analysis.

Does any one know if Happy Tails Rescue is still in operation? If so, how do you reach them by phone?

National Political Viewpoints

Well, I watched the entire boring democratic debate last night waiting to hear what they had to say about the economy, jobs, immigration, infrastructure, our military and our veterans, and I heard nothing. All they do is keep beating the drum about the phony impeachment. I cannot believe that not one of them realizes they need to address the concerns of the American people in order to get into the White House. They don’t stand a chance and I cannot believe they just don’t get it; they just don’t get it. Maybe they’ll get it next November when they all are defeated at the ballot box.

~

Congratulations to President Trump for bringing home two American hostages that have been held overseas for way too long. Now why couldn’t Bush to that? Why couldn’t Obama do it? No, you need to have a president in the White House who really is concerned about all American people, and we have him right now with President Trump. Thank you President Trump, two families are going to have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas this year, better than when President Obama was in the White House.

~

I think it’s about time the six democrats and the impeachment hearings get back to work giving away working people’s money to welfare rats.

~

The vapid democrats should not be scorned. They should be pitied and so should their pseudo presidential candidates and their pathetic debates. These hapless dimwit buffoons could not beat President Trump even with the backing of the lame stream media and George Soros’ billions of dollars.

~

When is Trump going to write his second book, Art of the Drug Deal? Get it republicans or is that over your head? Vote democrat.

~

The radical resistance funded by traitors George Soros and sycophants like AOC have met their match in President Donald Trump. The time of reckoning is approaching in 2020 when the lethargic republicans will no longer turn the other cheek and give the democrats a double dose of their own medicine. Payback will be painful for the left wing loons. The Trumpster and his patriot supporters will finally be heard, applauded, and definitely obeyed.

~

To the person who does not know who the whistleblower is – your own democratic party outed that whistleblower. Either you haven’t read it or you are too stupid to read.

I think the democrats have spent enough of our money on this witch-hunt trying to get rid of Trump. All they are doing is wasting our tax dollars, right along with CBS who is wasting all that money on this stuff and they are proving nothing. The witch that they are hunting for got on her broomstick and left when Trump got elected. You democrats need to give it up.

~

Trump lied on a TV interview 18 times within 50 minutes. One lie every three minutes about a whistleblower. It was all fact check by CNN; 45 times he mentioned the word whistleblower. His credibility should be questioned now. So republicans, make sure you vote for Trump. That’s the kind of president we want, a lying president!

~

Republicans, are you still supporting your man Trump with all the crooked stuff he’s done? He’s not only a crook, but he’s a stupid crook. Here we have a good economy and he’s running this country in debt as fast or faster than any president in history. Come on, wake up republicans, get your man out of there. Just like they say, you can’t fix stupid.

~

Go Trump and take your unmatched wisdom with you.

~

This is my fourth try callers – come on! I’m waiting for someone to call in with all that Russian collusion evidence that Adam Schiff had. Please, please call it in! I must have missed that program when it aired. I’d like to see all this evidence. I’m waiting.

~

I see none of my brother Nam vets commented on the double standard with Trump vs. Clinton. Why is that? Also, I applaud the president for the three pardons. Unless you’ve been in combat you have no right to judge. I know war crimes have been committed in the past by U.S. Forces and the offenders were rightly punished. These incidents were committed under extreme circumstances and our special op warriors are being pushed to the brink. One old grunts opinion.

~

As a prior military officer, Lt. Col. Vindman is a dishonorable disgrace. He broke a sacred trust. Since our founding military officers do not criticize the president or engage in politics for good reason. His honorable path was resigning and then voicing grievance. That’s the rule. Wrapping himself in the flag, with his uniform was despicable; Pentagon Lt. Colonel’s fetch coffee. Vindman’s next assignment should be to Thule, Greenland shoveling snow and fetching coffee. Where can I get a “Hillary 2020” sign?

~

“Renowned” economist Arthur Laffer? Someone misspelled “Discredited”.

~

News flash! The congress is a duly elected part of the government too. And the ability to impeach is in the same constitution you swear by when discussing gun rights.

~

Can someone please tell me what Mr. Trump has accomplished since taking office? There’s no infrastructure, no new wall, no Medicare or immigration reform, and not really clear on his trade wars. What I do know is there’s everyday smearing of the democrats, media, name-calling, and lies. I for one am sick to death of all this nonsense. Isn’t he supposed to be the leader?

~

I have learned one thing if anything else these last two weeks. That is there is no Republican Party left. It has become the Trump Party and it is evidenced by the willingness of what was called the Republicans insistence on whining about the impeachment process and not defending their leader. I guess as the evidence was given they found it really hard to defend him. This whole tribal atmosphere has brought to me one piece of knowledge. That is that even though we are Americans we have been divided by a President that continually attacks the other side and consistently hides facts from the American people. In fact, he has blocked anything including people and documents that may defend him. So it is his fault that he will be impeached. The people of the Trump Party have forgotten their oaths to defend the Constitution rather than kowtowing to the man in the White House. They will find that because they are not willing to at least be part of a process they are doomed to be voted out of their positions. Any American with half a mind and listens know this President has gone off the rails many times and did so this time and got caught. In fact, he was caught obstructing justice by Mueller, and it would not surprise me that he did work with the Russians to get elected after what he has pulled in Ukraine. The people that are not winning with this process are the Ukrainians, who were dragged through this and had people die waiting for assistance. America is not winning either as the man who claimed he would drain the swamp has actually created one.

~

I never thought Obama was particularly rational and reasonable, but when compared to the gaggle of loons the Democrats have running for president, he is! ROAR!
