Addy Whitmore got one step closer to completing the Village of Nichols Veterans Memorial last Friday with a $250 check from Community Bank N.A. in Nichols. The memorial is being placed near the Nichols Fire Department, located on West River Road.
As a part of Good Neighborhood Day, Community Bank donates service or money to a working project within the community. Last year the bank donated to the Tioga Nichols Little League. This year, Whitmore’s project was the recipient of the prize.
“We heard about what Addy is doing here with the veterans memorial park, so we decided that would be neat to donate to,” Branch Manager Chad Smith said.
Whitmore has been planning the Nichols Veterans Memorial for two years. She has meticulously been in charge of each decision including the design, sidewalk measurements, and the specific solar lights to be put in the ground.
When completed, a path will lead from the existing sidewalk to a large stone emblazoned with a plaque in front of a flagpole. The surrounding area will be landscaped with shrubs, flowers and benches.
Whitmore chose to take on this project to fulfill her Girl Scout Gold Award, the equivalent to a Boy Scout becoming an Eagle Scout. For two years she has been hitting the books and the community to raise funds and organize construction. Whitmore’s team finally began construction in late September with the removal of dirt and pouring of stone in preparation for concrete.
The memorial’s opening ceremony will be Nov. 9. Whitmore is confident that the memorial will be completed in time.
