On Sunday, Sept. 29, the VFW Post 1371 and its Auxiliary hosted a luncheon commemorating Gold Star Mothers Day. The observance of this day began during the World War I era to recognize and honor the mothers and families of fallen military service members.

This luncheon was a collaborative effort of American Legion Posts 1624, 401 and 907, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 480, Veterans of Modern Warfare Chapter 9, and VFW Posts 8104, 8139 and 1371, all from Tioga County.

In attendance were Senator Fred Akshar, County Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbey, and Town of Owego Supervisor Don Castellucci Jr., who continue to show their support for veterans and their families in our community. This luncheon recognizes Gold Star Families and the ultimate sacrifice of their loved one and is an opportunity to come together with Blue Star Families, those families who have an active duty service member deployed.

While every effort was made to locate Gold Star and Blue Star Families in Tioga County, we realize that some may have been unintentionally missed. If you are a Gold or Blue Star Family member or know of someone, contact the VFW Post 1371 by calling (607) 687-1371 or email to vfw1371@ymail.com and leave contact info so they can send an invitation for next year’s luncheon.
