Readers’ Column for the week of October 6, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The trails at the Brick Pond in Owego have been greatly improved recently and are very well marked thanks to the work of two Waterman Board members. The Brick Pond and the woods around it are a great local resource for wildlife, observing wildlife, hiking and forest bathing. The paths are best maintained by feet on the ground, meaning people walking on them. Take your kids, friends and neighbors to the Brick Pond and walk around the pond and help keep the trails open.

I have lived in Apalachin all my life and have watched the town go downhill. We have a lot of walkers and we have no place for them to walk besides in the road; the sidewalks we did have are in such disrepair they can’t be walked on. Main Street across from Ransom Steele Tavern has a sidewalk that you can’t see because it is covered with weeds and brush. It is a disgrace to have the middle of town look like this. There is also an old sidewalk across from the fire station that is in such bad shape you can’t walk on it; with the amount of taxes we pay we should have better! The town isn’t even doing anything about abandoned buildings with weeds and junk around them; can’t something be done.

~

This column is supporting data for verifying the Dunning-Kruger effect.

~

A discount for cash is legal. There’s no getting around it. Heck – take advantage and pay with cash.

~

I believe the Owego underpass and steps are a state responsibility.

~

No, the school taxes were not raised more than was voted. The stadium is being paid for with FEMA flood damage money.

~

The village, town, and many other local municipalities made deals to lock in the electricity rates for three years. No one is telling you that you have to participate. That’s why you have the ability to opt out.

~

Catholic Charities can support whatever cause they choose to support. You don’t get a vote. If you don’t agree with their choices, then don’t donate to them.

~

I just looked at a sample ballot for several small Towns in Tioga County. The GOP has a lock on most of these Towns with no opposition. My rights are protected. I can keep my guns, junk cars and a few bags of trash.

~

I’m just wondering what happened to the code enforcer in Apalachin. Has anybody seen West Main Street lately? It looks like we have a circus back in town; plus, across the street the field is growing a quarter of the way out in the road. If a big truck comes, you have to come to a stop because it will scratch your vehicle up. Just wondering what’s happening to our little town. It’s a shame West Main Street looks like it does in Apalachin.

~

I just want to say that Mike Baratta, the Mayor of Owego, is doing a great job. He always updates on what’s going on and everything. Keep up the good work Mike; you are doing a fantastic job!

~

When reading about a grassroots effort, apparently businesses are dying in the north country of New York State so they’re looking for incentives. Well how about lower taxes and lower compensation premiums? Do you think? Just a thought.

~

Many thanks to the guys who painted the yellow lines on Glenmary Drive!

~

To the person in the Pennysaver who wanted to know if the call was a scam about Medicaid and Medicare and your social security number. You never give out your Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security number to anybody! If Social Security people want you they will write you a letter; Medicaid / Medicare is the same. Do not ever give out your information. By the way, it’s against the law for somebody to call you and do that and you can report it to the police department.

~

Where is the Vestal Chick-fil-A we were promised over two years ago? That was probably a lie and it’s never going to come to New York due to the high price of doing business in New York. It’s time to move or elect a republican governor, someone who is friendly to the people and friendly to the businesses in New York.

~

I see where someone called in last week about the stadium at Owego Free Academy and how it was paid for. I’ve been wondering that myself. I don’t remember having a vote on that. Can someone please explain how they paid for it?

~

I wouldn’t let the village of Owego work on my bicycle let alone pick my electrical supplier.

National Political Viewpoints

More and more stories that I hear about Trump these days end with this phrase: “And remember, this is the fellow with the nuclear codes.”

~

President Trump and his followers should be forced to write the following 1,000 times: (1) Having a private server is not illegal, (2) Sending classified documents was not illegal, (3) Deleting these emails was not illegal. Perhaps then they will realize that Hillary Clinton’s only crime was her personality.

~

The U.S.A. through Biden as the official emissary, along with most of the western nations, was asking the Ukraine to replace their prosecutor because he was NOT investigating anyone. Not because he WAS investigating Biden’s son, but because he WAS NOT investigating anyone. Okay?

~

Whatever happened to the Golden Rule? I’ll bet many of you out there don’t even know what I am referring to. Simply put, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In other words, treat others as you would like to be treated. Wouldn’t THAT put a crimp on the mouths and actions of many in the Socialist Democrat side of the aisle!

~

For all the comments made last week about “here we go again another witch-hunt”; I, for one, like to keep things simple. People, who have nothing to hide, hide nothing.

~

Shopping on Amazon is becoming measurably more difficult. Their algorithms are pushing hard what they want to sell rather than allowing you to find what you want. Walmart online is much less the headache and offers products Amazon does not. Perhaps this will prevent Amazon from getting too cocky. Recently I did a search on Wikipedia of “Trump,” and it brought me to “The Racism of Donald Trump.” No more annual donations for them. The efforts at manipulation are scary.

~

He told a foreign leader to dig up dirt on his political opponent. He told a foreign leader to interfere in our 2020 election. He violated his oath. He betrayed his country. He should be impeached. NOTHING else matters. NOTHING. Have a nice Sunday.

~

Read the transcript of the entire Ukrainian President’s conversation with President Trump on the Internet for yourself. It is obviously totally friendly and correct. It is also obvious that the Marxist democrats are attempting a coup against a duly elected president because those dimwit democrat leaders are malicious, malevolent, manic, morose, maniacal sore losers. Go Trump!

~

I think the caller who said he had half a brain and would never vote democratic meant that it doesn’t take much reasoning to see that democrats are way out of line. The caller who responded to that saying that a full brain would vote democratic just doesn’t get it, which is exactly precisely true of the entire Democratic Party! They just don’t get it.

~

Republicans seem to want it both ways. First they want to cut the Social Security benefits that we have earned and now they want us less affluent people to pay for Donald’s defense. They seem to think that his ongoing questionable behavior is okay and we, the poor, should pay for it in more ways than one. Being taxed for money every day does not set well with this household.

~

With all the bickering going on and politicians getting nothing done, why do we need politicians at all? We could vote on all issues that come up and the voice of the American people would truly be heard.

~

When will democrats get down to the business of helping America instead of displaying abject stupidity?

~

Hey democrats, you lost the presidential election, realize that, because of your incompetence.

~

Let’s ditch the democrats and maybe we can get something done. The democrats are a disgrace, positively.

~

I have a message for all you Republican voters in Tioga County. I told you so!

~

Donald Trump is scared. He’s afraid if he doesn’t win the 2020 election he might be going to prison. They put Paul Manafort there, they put Jeffery Epstein there, and they could put Donald Trump there.

~

I think I smell a skunk in the woodpile. Biden and his son are on their way out. Now the question is, who is pulling the strings behind the curtain? Maybe Obama, maybe Elizabeth Warren, or maybe it’s another Marxist democrat hack.

~

That rat faced weasel, cheesy so called attorney Rudy Guiliani should be barred.

~

Sitting here watching the news and seeing this stuff going on with the whistle blower, I have to laugh because it is very pathetic that the President of the United States, first of all is doing what he did, then to lie about it and then to blame everybody else and then to have his close supporters lie for him. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I really hope that this goes all the way and he gets out of there because this man is dangerous for everybody, and if he gets another term he’s going to figure out how to do it for life.

~

Why are so many republicans and evangelists such hypocrites? They vote for that devil named Trump.

~

You want clean air? Democrats should shut their mouth.

~

Vote Democrat, Party of corruption.

~

This is in response to the comment in last week’s paper saying that Fox News stated that Trump has 9,000 investigations on him. Well that person has got to be a person that didn’t learn math in school; and besides, it’s not Fox News that lies, it’s mainstream fake news, like CNN and NBC.

~

Hey, whoever wrote about the clown in office, it takes a clown to write a comment like that. You’ve got to be joking me. You’ve got to be a democrat and may God have mercy on you!

~

I would like to get some feedback. How many people out there believe the democrats and the republicans work for us? They’re not our bosses, we pay their wages, and they don’t pay ours. How many people out there believe that the democrats have done nothing since January except investigate, impeach, resist, and lie? I would like to see the democrats and Mueller be made to pay back the $35 to $45 million of our taxpayer money that went for the phony dossier Russia report; but CNN/NBC, the fake news out there, hasn’t learned a thing, and neither have the democrats. Now they’re going to impeach. The democrats went on vacation for 46 days during the summer. We pay their taxes, our taxes pay their wages, and they got paid. Why are they wasting our dollars? They need to learn that they work for us, we don’t work for them, and they need to do something. How many people agree out there that they have done nothing?

~

I wish people would leave poor teary-eyed Chuck alone. At least he finally tried to do something by naming a post office. Like Hillary, I believe she accomplished several post offices during her tenure as senator. Oh, and don’t forget she stood in front of the Lockheed Martin employees and lied to their face about their upcoming government contract.

~

No one is allowed to employ a liar in any type of business, hospital or school, or other institution. So why is there such a big liar in the White House, and why is he allowed to stay there? Could someone answer this question? I bet not.

~

I would just like to say I’m celebrating my 85th birthday and God willing I want to live to see this man in the White House in the big house. This dictator is ruining our country. Let’s turn the table and yell, lock him up!

~

The American people elected a man to drain the swamp. The democrats do not like it, the deeper he drains. Myself and millions and millions more Americans thank you President Trump. He is doing exactly what the American people wanted him to do. It’s quite comical to watch as the democrats are squirming. This new impeachment attempt sounds exactly like the fake dossier. I’m convinced there is no believable whistleblower. This is just another hoax and this is just a resurrection and rewording of the fake dossier. Listen to it closely. If nothing, the democrats sure are creative, you’ve got to give them that!

~

Someone I know who was a boss once told me, you only fire yourself. That’s just what Trump is doing to himself. He gets in trouble with his mouth and his tweeting. He should stop tweeting, period!

~

The democrats better check out the treaty signed between the United States and Ukraine in 1999 between Ukraine and Bill Clinton to clean up crime. I bet Adam Schiff isn’t aware of this treaty or doesn’t want people to remember this treaty; so President Trump had it right to ask about Joe Biden and his son, because that was considered a crime that he wanted investigated.

~

I suggest that someone get a new dictionary. My Webster’s New World College Edition says impeach means to “challenge the practice or honesty, reputation and so forth especially to bring a public official before the proper tribunal on a charge of wrongdoing.” Then look up misdemeanors as in high crimes and misdemeanors, meaning any minor offense. Certainly thousands of lies told by a president to his constituents are more than minor offenses. I remember being punished for just one.

~

What a surprise, the house is on vacation for two weeks. Must be the stress got to them of doing nothing so they had to take some time off. 2020 is right around the corner, elections, vote them all out! It’s going to be fun to watch as it is now, watching them squirm because they know they are in trouble, so they’re really ramping up the impeachment inquiry because as more and more comes out, each and every one of them is going to be in some kind of trouble, which will also help in the 2020 elections. I can’t wait; I love this comedy – just loving it!

~

The whistleblower should get the Medal of Freedom, but certainly not from Dictator Donnie or any of his swamp people.

~

Recently said of the outcomes on mass shootings is this, “Though not all mass shootings have a common deranged person who goes into it with the expectation that they’re going to die, either by their own hand or through ‘suicide by cop,’ but it does tell us that a crazy person marching off with the expectation of not living out the day isn’t going to be terribly concerned about whether or not his gun is registered.” So much for gun buybacks, confiscations, and gun registration registers. It does say more about the LACK of affordable and available mental healthcare, which is ignored by the number of available facilities, providers and insurance, private or public. Also by the state, which has hand tied our educators to be able to intercede in a meaningful way to move issues out of the classroom and to provide professional health for students and parents as a prerequisite of being in school.
