Over 70 animals were sold at the 52nd Annual 4-H Livestock Auction held during the Tioga County Fair this summer. 4-H youth worked hard all year long to raise their animals before marketing them to prospective buyers and then presenting them in shows throughout the Tioga County Fair. Their hard work paid off at the auction, where youth sold their animals for a grand total of $34,251.60.

With a growing number of livestock-raising youth in the Tioga County 4-H program, this year’s auction saw an increase in animals and a profit of $10,826 more than in the previous year. The youth each received the earnings from their own animal’s original sale.

The learning experience that these nine- to 19-year-old’s gain through the livestock auction lasts all year, beginning with choosing their market animals to finally budgeting their earnings after the auction. Many of the 4-H members planned to use their earnings to invest in next year’s auction animal, and to pay for animal feed and other animal care expenses that they incurred throughout the year.

The 2019 grand champion market beef steer, raised by Alysa Williams of the Animal Aholics 4-H Club, weighed 1,264 lbs. and was purchased by Bryan’s Meat Cutting in Milan, Pa. for $2.40 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market beef steer was Bryan’s Family Farm of East Smithfield, Pa. The reserve grand champion market beef steer, raised by Tammy Perrotta of the Farm Fanatics 4-H Club, weighed 1,050 lbs. and was purchased by Laura Huizinga of Brooktondale, N.Y. for $1.40 per pound. In total, six market beef steers sold for an average of $1.47 per pound.

The grand champion market dairy steer, raised by Jasmine Aufhammer of the Farm Fanatics 4-H Club, weighed 1,457 lbs. and was purchased by Ward & Van Scoy of Owego, N.Y. for $1.00 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion dairy steer was Janine Bellis of Barton, N.Y. The reserve grand champion market dairy steer, raised by David Van Dusen III of the Animal Aholics 4-H Club, weighed 1,190 lbs. and was purchased by Michael Austin of Waverly, N.Y. for $.75 per pound. In total, three market dairy steers sold for an average of $.83 per pound.

Hogs were the most represented species at the auction, with a total of 31 hogs sold – almost double the number sold the previous year. The grand champion market hog, which was raised by Ryan Huizinga of the Flora & Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 237 lbs. and was purchased by Home Central in Owego, N.Y. for $3.50 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market hog was Owen and Ryan Huizinga of Huizinga Hogs, of Willseyville, N.Y. The reserve grand champion market hog, which was raised by Dylan Klossner of the Farm Fanatics 4-H Club, weighed 271 lbs. and was purchased by Ralph Porter of Waverly, N.Y. for $3.25 per pound. Thirty-one market hogs sold for an average of $2.51 per pound.

The grand champion market lamb, raised by Brody Hines of the All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, weighed 98 lbs. and was purchased by Home Central in Owego, N.Y. for $3.50 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market lamb was Brody Hines of Newark Valley, N.Y. The reserve grand champion market lamb, raised by Kyle Jantz of the Flora & Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 85 lbs. and was purchased by Owego Pharmacy, located in Owego, N.Y., for $3.25 per pound. In total, four lambs sold for an average of $2.87 per pound.

The grand champion market goat, raised by Rosie Hines of the All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, weighed 76 lbs. and was purchased by Goodrich Auction of Newark Valley, N.Y. for $3.25 per pound. The goat was then donated back through the auction, and was purchased by Patrick Ballester of Candor, N.Y. for $1.50 pound. The breeder of the grand champion market goat was Rosie Hines of Newark Valley, N.Y. The reserve grand champion market goat, raised by Rachel Brennan of the All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, weighed 82 lbs. and was purchased by Jennifer Bassman and Heritage Haus Farm of Berkshire, N.Y. for $2.25 per pound. In total, two goats sold for an average of $3.45 per pound.

For the very first time, market turkeys were sold at the 4-H Livestock Auction.  The grand champion turkey, raised by Madison Peabody of the Paws to Think 4-H Club, weighed 31.6 lbs. and was purchased by Andrew Fagan of Waverly, N.Y. for $200. The reserve grand champion turkey, raised by William Whittemore of the Flora & Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 28.2 lbs. and was purchased by Bayonne Gowan of Candor, N.Y. for $500. A total of 11 turkeys sold for an average of $6.66 per pound.

The grand champion meat bird pen, raised by Madison Peabody, held five birds and was purchased by Maple Creek Farm for $275. The reserve grand champion meat bird pen, raised by Johanna Pilny of the All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, held five birds and was purchased by Verlyn Warrington of Sayre, Pa. for $110. In total, 37 meat birds sold for an average of $3.25 per pound.

The grand champion meat rabbit pen, raised by Brody Hines, held three rabbits and was purchased by Kelly Whittemore for $80. The rabbit pen was then donated back through the auction, and was purchased again by Ricky Pearson of Cortland Manor, N.Y. for $60. Legacy Motors, of Sayre, Pa., purchased the reserve champion meat rabbit, raised by Jacob Guiles of the Flora & Fauna Friends 4-H Club, for $35. The breeder of the grand champion market rabbits was Brody Hines. Five total rabbits were sold, for an average of $20 per pound.
