Opinion: Reminder of an important election deadline

Dear Editor,

Please remind your New York readers about an important election deadline. According to the New York State Board of Elections website, “An application to change one’s party enrollment for 2020 must be received by the board of elections no later than October 11, 2019.”

If a voter wants to have a real voice in who is elected the next president, they may want to update their party enrollment. This is particularly true for Republicans and independents. The Republican Party seems locked in, supporting a second term for the sitting president. Republican voters will have little say before the general election in November 2020.

Democrats, on the other hand, have a huge field of candidates that will be sorted out through the 2020 primary process, including the New York primary in April. Some of these candidates propose policies that may alarm more conservative and middle-of-the road voters. The vote of these moderates could benefit the Democrats by favoring a candidate with broad appeal, and their vote could help put the most qualified candidate into the presidency.

Party enrollment remains in effect for one calendar year, but it isn’t permanent. The 2020 presidential election presents a unique opportunity. After that a voter can change enrollment again, effective for 2021 and beyond.

Oct. 11 is coming up soon. The process is easy, but act quickly.

Sincerely,

Cliff Gray
