Readers’ Column for the week of September 15, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Here it is, Wednesday morning, the first day of school, and I am on Route 96 caught between a stopped Owego school bus and a sheriff’s car when a white car blows through the Owego bus driver’s red lights, and as little kids are boarding the bus. And what does the cop do? Nothing. I couldn’t believe it. I’m still pissed! Shame they couldn’t do something.

I just want to say for once and for all that the earth is definitely flat; I am a flat earth(er), and the reason I know it’s flat is because you cannot see any curvature of the earth when you are in an airplane. I know pilots, several of them, and they say no curvature can be seen at commercial airline heights, and I think airplane windows are specially made to distort the view of passengers to make them believe there is a curvature when there is no curvature.

They say that these people going around checking the electric bills are a scam. I want a scammer to come to my door. My electric extra charge is a price to compare default service for $80.64. Now I ask you, why do I need to pay a price to compare default service? I don’t understand. I’d love somebody to call in about this because on May 2015 it was $150.

Why all the big deal about renaming the Owego Post Office? Why do we have to name it after a person? Let’s just call it the Owego Post Office and be done with it.

~

The Pennysaver adding the national political viewpoints to this column was a big mistake. It’s a place where people dump their vitriol and it’s very depressing to read sometimes. Put in something more positive instead of the political garbage.

~

So now Cuomo wants to fight the pipeline? How much harder can he crush his heel into New York State and its future potential? He’s killing New York State and the kicker is that this pipeline will bring us gas from Pennsylvania when we have billions of cubic feet of our own here in New York! Vote this banana out!

~

I agree with the caller about the length of the statements for this column. Long ones I also skip reading, they belong in letters to the editor. Get to the point, check your facts and make it as short as possible.

Is 17 going to remain the way it is in construction or will it be paved before the winter hits? It’s awful bumpy now; I ride it twice a day every day for a week. It’s terribly unsafe. It needs to be fixed.

~

I see where Dancing with the Stars is coming up soon at Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols. I was reading the names of the contestants and didn’t recognize any of the contestants this year. I went last year and enjoyed the show very much. Local Joe Yaman and his partner put on a performance that I will never forget. It was outstanding.

~

I don’t understand my water bills. Some weeks it’s $18, some weeks its $26, some months it’s $32. We are the same two old people that aren’t doing anything different. Does anyone else have a problem with the differences? I don’t understand.

Many, many thanks to whoever was responsible for silencing the all night barking dog located Route 96 Catatonk. It cost me many hours of much needed sleep. I guess some people can tune out disturbing sounds like living near train tracks or a busy highway. So thanks again somebody.

I am writing about the naming of the Owego Post Office after Belva Lockwood. The Owego Post Office was built in 1919 and is one of three buildings in the village that is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a very significant building. What is the process that should be followed in deciding whether to “Name” a building or site, and what is the process then to decide who it should be named after? This brings us to the question of who initiated this with Senator Schumer and why? The Senator’s appearance in Owego to announce his sponsorship of the naming legislation was a surprise to many. Is it a fitting acknowledgement of a noteworthy Owegoan’s contribution to Owego, our state or country, or is it a clever marketing scheme to create a “Brand” to be traded on? If it is to be changed, the people of Owego should decide in a deliberate process.

~

Can somebody write in and let me know when we elect the next mayor of Owego?

~

As long as we are naming the Owego Post Office after Belva Lockwood, perhaps we should change the name of the village since there is little significance in the name Owego. Here are a few suggestions: Belva Town, Belva Lockwoodville or maybe just Belva Lockwood. Now that would put us on the map.

Found on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Green Acres, a wrist fitness band. If you can describe it, it’s yours. Please contact (607) 427-0922.

You would think that out of nine legislators in Tioga County, that one of them would respond to the issue (pro or con) of TAXING fuels that heat our homes! Maybe to them 3 percent does not mean much but to the hard working families and those that are on fixed incomes of Tioga County it does!

~

Lets not wait for the junkyard on Elm Street in Newark Valley to get out of hand like it did on Whig Street. Who knows what potential hazards lurk; oil, gas, battery acid leaking into the ground, vermin, and a chance of fire.

~

It was nice of the road crew in the village of Candor to not work for two weeks solid right before the school year started, and then holds everyone up since it did.

~

The Owego Post Office is a FEDERAL building. Belva Lockwood was prominent on both local and federal levels. If you have another local person who also was involved with the U.S. Federal Government, by all means bring that name forward. Otherwise, please find another way to memorialize the individual you have in mind.

The Village of Waverly needs to tighten up on who they allow to be on their recommended contractor list. I am a senior citizen and a veteran. I had my concrete front steps and cellar walls, supposedly, repaired. Both jobs have failings that need to be corrected. About two months ago, the contractor never showed up for an appointment to recheck his work. I called numerous times and left my name and phone number after that. He just lets my call go to Voice Mail and never contacts me. Doesn’t keep his word of 100 percent guaranteeing his work.

Wendy Deis’s letter last week points out the many attributes of the Village of Owego and its residents. One of the great things about our village is the freedom of speech, freedom to express heartfelt opinion, openly discuss varying views, and ultimately come together for the good of our village. This was not the case with the renaming of a building in the Village to honor Belva Lockwood. A politician rolled into town, waved his magic wand, choosing a federally owned post office, with, as far as I can determine, little to no input from the majority of residents. There are other places that could have come into consideration – the soon to be revamped village offices, one of the schools, etc. The point is, if this is such a big deal, the opinion of all residents should have been solicited, not a call by a single politician while we just accept his decision like good little communists. Should we not appreciate research done by neighbors who cared enough to look into alternatives? They are just as devoted to our Village as anyone; certainly more than someone who is not even a Village resident, who has not personally experienced all the events Ms. Dies refers to. What makes us great is mutual respect; let’s not lose that over a hasty, sneaky decision that affects us, not Albany. This person should have taken the time and had the courtesy to listen to any and all that cared to voice an opinion.

National Political Viewpoints

Why is it okay to put up a Hillary Clinton or a Bernie Sanders or an Elizabeth Warren sign in your yard but not a Trump sign? Trump supporters are being targeted by the extreme left. This has got to stop and don’t tell me it’s Trump that is dividing this country, it is the left – loud and clear!

~

The biggest existential threat to the U.S.A. is the diabolical Democratic Party with their group of Marxist socialist candidates. Fossils like Joe Biden and the anti American goon squad led by Cortez need to be relegated to the garbage heap of history, which hopefully will take place after the 2020 elections. Conservatives need to take back the House of Representatives to make America great again. Go Trump!

~

I have a good joke that was on TV. This applies to the great negotiator in the White House during hurricane Dorian. I quote, “Just because you slept with a stormy does not make you a weatherman.”

~

I understand that the United States has a peace plan in place between Israel and Palestine after the first of the year. President Trump’s son-in-law Jared, and behind the scene’s son Baron Trump have put the deal together.

~

Jeannine Pirro makes me sick when I see her so happy and laughing and smirking and making fun of other people on the Fox News program. All I could think of is when she was driving 119 mph. She could have killed someone in Nichols, N.Y. She should hang her head in shame and shut up. She really should have served jail time, don’t you think?

~

I hate to bring it up but I’m still waiting for the big evidence of Russian collusion. Nothing. Then the Mueller report was going to be the beyond all proof. Again, nothing. The democrats should just admit defeat after all four years and retire and put republicans in their seats. That way important issues would get done, they would be completed for the betterment of the American people.

~

So seven illegal immigrants since July have raped American women. Is this what the Democrats want? It must be with their open borders and let all the illegals in, no vetting, come on in this country is yours. Well thank you democrats; it’s not what I want.

~

Why is the left so against religious liberty and patriotism? You cannot even express your opinion without fear of being attacked. Thank goodness President Trump is our president. Religion and patriotism must be brought back and Trump is the man to do it. He’s got his hands full undoing the mess Obama left us when he went around the world apologizing to everybody for America.

~

Hey democrats, does God let everybody into heaven? Vote republican.

~

Walmart stores are a gold mine for China. I dare say 75 percent of Walmart products come from China. Products from China look good and are cheap prices but do not last as long as products from the United States. U.S. Products are more expensive and last at least three times longer. If Walmart pulled China products from their stores China would be hurting unless they found another sucker for their junk.

~

Trump always finds a distraction like firing John Bolton. He thinks people will forget the stupid sharpie pen weather episode he did. No way Trump will we forget. We know that you’re not too bright.

~

Please help me understand something. Have Democrats always been this wacky?

~

The 20 dimwit presidential candidates are the biggest joke ever foisted on the American people. Even dumber is the new green deal, an end to fossil fuels, the climate fiasco big lie, and all the other nut job scenarios. Biden is imploding. Beto is a loser and Warren is a moron. President Trump will win in a landslide, as he justly deserves.

~

So the democrats had nothing but complaints when Bolton was named National Security Advisor back in 2018. Now with his resignation they say he was the best man for the job. What gives? If the Democrats had issue with his hiring, why are they having issues with his firing? The Democrats do not know what end is up, but that should not be a surprise to anyone.

~

The postcard received in my mail stating Father says and the remark about Trump is definitely a very sick person. It was worth the price of a postage stamp to send it back. God does not work that way. Also, I am a democrat and I am appalled at this means of campaigning!

~

Why does the United States blame Afghanistan for 9/11 and not Saudi Arabia? The ones who committed the crime of 9/11 were Arabians. You figure. That’s like the Kennedy assassination, other ones shot Kennedy and Oswald took the blame.

~

Now this one puts the icing on the cake. Did you hear Trump’s remarks on vaping? He said his wife is doing her business with this vaping and the kids because she has a son that she’s concerned about, not we, she. The man does not know the word share, us, we or ours. Come on you guys, you’ve got to be smarter than that. Get him out! He’s dangerous.

~

How will history be written? Who will be the one to stand and say we want background checks on guns Mr. President? Who will be the one to stand and say we want fair immigration laws Mr. President? Who will be the one to stand and say we will help devastated flooded and hurricane hit countries without requiring documented verification Mr. President? Who will be the one to stand and say we accept no more lies Mr. President? Who will be the one to stand and say Mr. Putin and Kim Jong Un are not our friends Mr. President? Will it be Mitch McConnell? Will it be Rand Paul? Will it be Kevin McCarthy? Will it be Michael Pence? Will it be Jim Jordan? How about William Barr? Who will our grandchildren be reading about in history books? WHO WILL BE THE ONE TO STAND?

~

Let’s see if I have this straight. People like Robert De Niro, Debra Messing, Alyssa Milano, all of whom make big money pretending to be someone else, memorizing words someone else has written, living a pretend life, are supposed to be listened to? Why? What have they DONE that deserves any attention whatever?

~

The U.S. and its one size fits all governments isn’t going to happen. The more Washington D.C. threatens, demands, blackmails economic sanction and alleged action with outproof the more these countries are determined not to change. The changes the U.S. wants to have happen from inside the country with the support of the majority, which has already failed with the U.S. backed President. Stop meddling in the affairs of sovereign countries, the U.S. wasted 40 million trying to blame the results of the 2016 election on Russia meddling, which has been proven to be untrue by the U.S. Courts, so stop doing it to other countries and take care of the problems at home.

  1. The the latest unfriendly action by the Village of Newark Valley was to issue citations regarding insufficient clearance for branches overhanging the sidewalk. The clearance is supposed to be 10feet. 10′? I don’t think there is a dude in the county wearing a top hat that would require that much. Come on, who dreams up this stuff? Not practical in some cases the way trees have grown. Maybe this is a state thing which would explain it, They are so off the rails they don’t even know it.
