The Little Meadows, Pennsylvania community will gather on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Little Meadows Fire Station hall for a Community Reunion scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m.
Little Meadows native, Linda Kemmerer explained that following the loss of two long-time residents earlier this year; she started searching for a way to reconnect friends and neighbors.
Kemmerer had tossed around an “Old Home Day” theme, but after reaching out to others in the community, a new idea evolved, “Coffee with Friends.” The now monthly get-together started this past April and brings together residents on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at Whitetails Bar & Grill, located at the intersection of Route 858 and Main Street in Little Meadows.
A spin-off from the successful Coffee with Friends, Kemmerer then suggested a Community Reunion. Volunteers eagerly raised their hands to help and then formed a committee.
Committee member Rhonda Pitcher remarked, “Every month someone different is able to come to Coffee With Friends.”
Theresa Casterline, also a committee member, added, “Coffee with Friends has brought together from fifteen to thirty people monthly.”
Little Meadows consists of about 200 residents in the Borough and another 800 in the Township.
Kemmerer said, “The reunion will most likely be a one-time event, but we will still meet monthly for Coffee with Friends.”
The Reunion Committee invites everyone who has a connection to Little Meadows, past or present, to the Sept. 14 event. A chance to reminisce, the organizers hope that most of the afternoon is spent visiting with old friends and neighbors.
Snacks, coffee and lemonade will be on hand. Whitetails Bar & Grill will serve up lunch-style selections. The committee asks guests coming to the reunion to bring along a snack, dessert or appetizer to share, but only if they are able.
Simple activities for children and two trivia contests will take place. Guests deemed the oldest or who have traveled the longest distance would receive a copy of the 175th Anniversary Little Meadows United Methodist Church cookbook.
Eleanor Hastings, who has lived in Little Meadows for over 70 years, donated one of her hand-made quilts for the occasion. The committee-raised money to cover expenses associated with the reunion, and in turn, will put all of the names of individuals who donated into a basket. The name drawn will take home Hastings prize quilt.
And, not just any quilt, the piece is really a historical keepsake. Designed in the Dresden Plate pattern, the muslin background of each quilt block consists of portions of the original curtains from St. Thomas Parish Hall, a Catholic Church that closed several years ago.
Interestingly, the quilt also conjures up memories of Little Meadows residents, Hastings included, who met weekly at each other’s homes to partake in lunch and quilt together, or to work on other needle and sewing crafts.
The committee asks guests to bring along photos to scan and share, too. A slideshow will be presented at the reunion.
