Owego’s First Friday will take place on Friday, Sept. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. in the historic Village of Owego. September is a time of transitions, and there is no transition more meaningful than the start of a new school year. The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM) will place Owego Youth and the organizations that support them, front and center during Owego First Friday as we celebrate Back To School Week.

Enjoy a lively game of Volleyball hosted by the Owego Volleyball Girls Team at Draper Park. Kids of all ages will enjoy learning some skills, watching the action or testing their abilities. The Owego Volleyball Program is built on pride and tradition. Their success on and off the court dates back many years. Athletes work hard every day to not only be better volleyball players but better people too. Their dedication and work ethic doesn’t just show on the court, it shows off the court as well. They are all great students and are always willing to help make our community a better place.

Also showcasing their love of sports will be members of the OFA Unified Basketball team. This league is truly rooted in unity, with Unified Sports bringing together boys and girls with and without learning disabilities on the same teams. Breaking down barriers, overcoming challenges, forming bonds and having fun is the goal of these youth. Members of the public can meet these players at the corner of Lake and Front.

As our youth head back to school The Historic Owego Marketplace is pleased to showcase two local organizations that are working to educate students while providing resources for parents and leaders. Tioga County ASAP has a mission to inform and engage our communities in efforts to understand, own, and address the negative impact of substance abuse through increased collaboration for community-level change.

Families may also stop and meet representatives from the Family Reading Partnership of Owego. Creating a culture of literacy – one book, one family, one community at a time is the mission of this organization and volunteers will be on hand to share information on how you can help accomplish their goals. Find these groups on Lake Street.

Lockheed Martin, a major sponsor of First Friday, will be returning to the Tioga County Tourism Center with interactive STEAM projects as well as a Virtual Reality flight simulator that will put you in the cockpit and behind the controls of an F-35 Aircraft. Space is limited for this event and participants are encouraged to arrive early and sign-up.

The Historic Owego Marketplace is grateful and honored to announce a grant award from the Floyd J. Hooker Foundation. The Floyd J. Hooker foundation has a mission that is clear and simple: “To benefit the children of Tioga County.”

HOM is pleased to be able to facilitate this mission by donating to each of the Youth organizations represented during Owego First Friday! In addition to the performance and activities made available by this grant for Owego First Friday, each and every HOM produced event will host youth activities made possible by the Floyd J. Hooker Foundation.

The best day of the month is First Friday when Owego is filled with creativity, your friends, great art, great food and fun. This is all made possible through the support of our local Merchants. With over a dozen locations offering live music, shopping discounts, displays and demonstrations, there is something for everyone!

This months featured sponsor is the Black Cat Gallery. The Black Cat Gallery, located on Front Street, was created in 2010. There is great pride in the charming retail store, which offers a venue for more than 30 local artists to sell their work. A bright, friendly, and ever changing store, the Black Cat Gallery provides a wide range of artwork that includes jewelry, pottery, photography, metal and woodwork, fine art, textiles and fiber art, and a wonderful selection of mixed media. Join them Friday for live music from the group “Story”, tarot card readings and featured artist Marti Hawley.

You can find updated information and what shops and restaurants have planned by visiting the Facebook page Historic Owego Marketplace or online at Owego.org.
