Over the past week, day camp participants at the Owego Gymnastics and Activity Center have been challenging each other in various ways, with one of them being for a good cause. Recently, day camp participants were part of a contest to see who could bring in the most non-perishable food items by Thursday. The result, 836 cans were collected by the Owego Gymnastics Team and the campers.
On Thursday, Sister Mary O’Brien, executive director of Tioga County Rural Ministry, made a stop at the center to thank the youth and to collect the goods, which will help feed those in need through the Owego pantry. Some of the items collected included cans of vegetables, boxes of cereal, cans of soup, and other nonperishable items.
Following the presentation of the food, the team that collected the most goods was allowed to put a pie in the faces of the coaches.
Assembling outside for the latter part of the contest, the staff sat in chairs to accept their fate. Using pie plates filled with whipped cream, glitter, balloons, water guns, and even silly string, the team members and campers offered a slice of humble pie to the staff and counselors; toilet paper was even applied in the end.
