Historic Owego Marketplace and Boys and Girls Club team up for Owego’s First Friday

The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM) and The Boys and Girls Club of Tioga County will team up to host ‘Owego Game Day’ during Owego’s First Friday, planned for Aug. 2 beginning at 6 p.m. With over a dozen participating locations hosting special events, dining and shopping specials, Owego First Friday has quickly become the best day of the month in Owego.

Owego Game Day will be fun for all ages! As you stroll the village, stop and try your hand at some classics like Cornhole, Ring Toss, and Pin The Tail On The Donkey! Giant Jenga and Giant Checkers will supersize the fun as well!

Participants can play simply for fun, or pick up a scorecard and play for prizes. Scorecards, instructions, and a brochure of events will be available at participating locations, and at all game locations the day of the event.

Owego First Friday will also host a small musical concert from the ensemble “Overture”, located in the Tioga County Tourism Center beginning at 6 p.m. Overture, a beginner level band for adults, was formed in 2012 and is provided as a program through the Jewish Community Center in Vestal. The director and founder, Kim Metaxas, is a local Music Therapist and Music Educator who wanted to provide an ensemble for adults who used to play an instrument and desired to start playing again, or who desired to learn how to play an instrument for the first time.

The program values the cognitive, physical, and intrinsic benefits of engaging in music experiences whether you started at a young age or later in life. Overture rehearses on Wednesday evenings throughout the year, and performs at local nursing homes and venues during the winter holiday and summer seasons. New members are always welcome!

In 2019 The Historic Owego Marketplace and its members have increased their initiative to engage with other local non-profit groups, working together to continue to better the community.

“Working with a group like The Boys and Girls Club to host a free community event for kids of all ages, is exactly what HOM has been hoping to accomplish, combining resources and talents with our community partners to make Owego the best place to live, work and play,” stated the HOM President, Bradley Crews.

The Boys and Girls Club of Tioga County, under the direction of new Executive Director Jamie Holliday, continues to make a difference in the community, one child at a time.

In response to this new collaboration, Holliday stated, “First Friday is one of the exciting events that happens regularly in the Village, and the Club is proud to participate in the August Game Day theme. Working with HOM is a natural partnership as we highlight all the great things in our community. The mission of the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club is to enable all youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens and by going out into the community and engaging with kids and families through events like these, we are able to promote responsibility and citizenship through recreation, play and fun.”

All activities begin at 6 p.m. A brochure of events is available online and at participating locations. Owego First Friday happens rain or shine; all outdoor activities will be moved to The Elks Lodge in case of inclement weather.
