Silver Lake Elementary School is having a reunion!

Silver Lake Elementary School opened in 1955 as the children born to soldiers returning from World War II became school-age and overwhelmed the one room school house system that was in place at the time. This was the era of science, technology, engineering, and the baby boomers!

Recognizing the need for education that continued past eighth grade and that provided a background for more than just agricultural work, the Silver Lake Elementary school was planned and opened in 1955. The school closed in 1971 for elementary grades and briefly housed the Montrose school district’s seventh graders until 1974.

Graduates of the school would often be split up, with those from the northern half of Silver Lake Township sent to Vestal middle and high school and those from south of Laurel Lake sent to Montrose for grades seven through 12. Many students selected to attend Seton Catholic high school.

Many of those baby boomers that graduated from Silver Lake Elementary left the area, but a large number have remained or returned to the area now that they are at or near retirement age. Recently a committee was formed to plan a reunion to reflect on those years and to gather history, funny or sad stories, memories, and any artifacts that can help preserve the history of this brief but meaningful chapter in the life of our region.

The reunion will be held at the Silver Lake Volunteer Firemen’s field day grounds on Aug. 31 from 1 to 5 p.m., rain or shine. A barbecue chicken lunch catered by Phil‘s Chicken House will be served at 1 p.m. The cost to attend is $5, payable at the door or by check to SLESR, c/o Jim Hayes, 384 West Wilkes-Barre Turnpike, Montrose, Pa. 18801.

Guest speakers are being invited, displays are being created, and significant research is being done to enrich the experience. If you or a spouse were a graduate of this era, the committee would love to have you attend. If you cannot attend but you have a story you would like heard, contact the committee as below.

Also, please let the committee know if you can attend by emailing Jim Hayes at knowsguy@aol.com, by calling Marian Muss at (570) 663–2135, or emailing Jack Strope at Jack.m.Strope@gmail.com.

  1. Hello,
I went to Silver Lake for seventh grade and it closed in either 1980 or 1981. My class of 1986 was the last class to go there. I’m almost positive, we were the last class to attend. The article is showing 1974?
