Readers’ Column for the week of June 30, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Now that the OACSD vote is final, I hope we can once again be allowed to comment. Is any one else disturbed by the fact that they “ran out of ballots” at the middle school location and some of us were asked to vote on hand-made ballots; the “ballots” unnumbered, printed on a copier and put through the emergency ballot slot instead of being scanned and counted properly by the machine? Hopefully there was proper oversight of the counting of these, aside of it being done by retired OACSD staff (who have a vested interest in the results).

I see where the New York State politicians are all done for this year until January 2020. Where can you make this kind of salary and work half of a year?

~

Fireworks. I think only the professionals should have them and only on the 4th of July, not every blessed night, two to three weeks before the 4th and after the 4th. It’s insane! It sounds like a gun going off. We have enough problems with guns and then you have these firecrackers that sound like guns going off. I’m surprised the police aren’t getting lots of phone calls.

~

Three times in the last 10 days I was nearly hit head on by drivers who refuse to stop and/or yield at the intersection of Erie and East Front Street in Owego. This morning, Saturday, a van ran a stop sign as I was heading up East Front to Mountain Road and missed my car by about one and a half feet. On Wednesday, a woman driving a SUV did the same. I had to swerve off the road and nearly hit the entrance to the road leading up to cemetery. And last week, a man driving a full size pickup ran the stop sign and missed me by about two feet. I slammed on my brakes, looked at him, and he gave me a grotesque “hand signal”. I sincerely hope that the police would look into this matter. I pray that something can be done.

~

If you have had the misfortune of hitting the pothole on West Avenue, check your tires. I have three hubcaps in my yard.

~

If the man who killed Ruby were given life in prison it would give him a chance to repent of what he did.

~

What is the big deal about measles vaccinations? Before they had the medicine everybody had the measles and there wasn’t any big problem that I recall.

~

I agree New York State has to do a lot to compete with other states. As long as idiots keep putting Democrat Cuomo into office this is what we are going to be handed with. I have never voted a democratic governor and I never will! But then again what do you expect? Cuomo is wasting his time on laws about declawing cats. A Republican should replace Cuomo. They say any state with a republican governor is among the lowest paying taxes for the people. That’s what we need here in New York.

~

There’s a new Internet scam going around now. You’re on the computer, it freezes up and then Microsoft supposedly wants you to call them. It’s a scam. They ask you to go get gift cards to pay to fix the computer. Don’t do it! Hang up and call the police!

~

Is there anyone that could call this column to tell me how to scare deer off of my property? I don’t have a dog and I don’t own a gun. I’ve tried to chase the deer away but they don’t pay any attention. They are eating my plants and wrecking my yard.

~

Thank you so much for the two men who helped our son Dalton after his bad bike accident on Jewitt Hill Road in Apalachin. Also special thanks to the firemen and ambulance squad for helping him out. Everyone was fantastic. He is doing much better, and it looks like he will have no lasting injuries but will need the summer to heal up. Thank you again. Tom and Tammy!

~

If you have had enough of New York State’s lack of values and high taxation please go to www.splitthestate.com and sign the petition from Assemblyman David DiPietro to split New York State into three separate voting blocks; and please pass this information on.

~

If anyone collects stamps I have duplicates I will give away. Give your phone number in this column and I will call you.

~

If you have been paying attention for the last couple of years you’d know that the village of Owego couldn’t bill fairly for sewage usage based on not being able to get off the couch and count toilets in apartments and business units. It’s much easier to use the slacker system.

~

I just want to say, I am an elderly person and elderly people get taken advantage of all the time. All I can say is COMPLAIN. Lodge the complaint against the person that takes advantage of you with the Better Business Bureau if you have to. We live in a society where people think they are not going to be bothered or paid attention to. We are not going to be paid attention to if nobody COMPLAINS! Do it; not just for your own good, but for everybody’s good.

~

For you people who trust in the siding installer to give you extra insulation, I paid $1,600 to buy the 1 inch urethane insulation for my whole house but now when it’s 80 or 85 degrees outside it’s still 73 inside. If you’re relying on the contractor to put in a quarter inch wrap, it’s a waste of your money. Pay the money and get the insulation. It’s cooler in the summertime and warmer in the wintertime.

~

Hey Owego, you want business why don’t you put another Sonic or A&W where you can drive up there and get food and they can hang it on your window.

~

The best racing in the area happens at Champion Speedway in Owego. Signed, the Halsey Valley bandits.

~

Does anyone know why the Town of Owego is filling in the wetlands on E. Beecher Hill Road, directly across from Kings Point Road? I would think this may be protected and do not recall reading anywhere where it was inspected and approved by the DEC.

~

Shame on the caller who was lamenting the Owego village board member who is absent occasionally or needs to leave early. If this person had spoken to just about any person in this village before expressing his uninformed opinion, he would realize this trustee has been facing unbelievable and serious challenges for several years – yet he overcomes them to serve this village; maybe they are not able to attend the meetings, but rest assured, they are doing their job.

~

My name is Ellen. I live on Main Street right before you cross the tracks to Erie Street. I just want to thank the stupid jerk for hitting my driver’s side mirror on my Honda on Thursday night – and not stopping. I will be checking with my neighbors to see if any of them have a surveillance camera. And to the other stupid jerk who almost hit me as I was looking at the damage. Thanks for swerving at the “last second”.

National Political Viewpoints

Today the Iranians shot down a U.S. Triton Drone, which, for you liberal Marxists, has a larger wingspan than a Boeing 737 over international waters in the Straits of Hormuz. Now you will see what a real leader like President Trump does. There will be no invasion and no ground troops. We should destroy Iranian oil refineries and missile sites and he may even do what President Reagan did in the 80’s, destroy the entire Iranian navy. Go Trump!

~

America’s economy is outshining all other countries in the world thanks to President Trump. I don’t even want to think of where our economy would be had our voters been stupid enough to put Hillary in office. We don’t have the democratic way of government run welfare. What a frightening thought and what a frightening way of living.

~

Trump is playing chess while all the pinheads around the world are playing checkers. They’re not patriots, Iran will get their just desserts exactly when Trump decides. We must not get into a prolonged war to make sure the Strait of Hormuz oil gets to countries such as China, Japan, and Europe.

~

A new revelation is out, another woman has accused Trump of raping her. Now, isn’t this an awful pattern we see here? How many women have accused Trump of rape in previous years? And he said he used to grab them by the personals? He’s no good and he needs to go. I can’t wait until the next election to get him out because he’s going to jail.

~

If your financial advisor said this was the worst performance record out of the recession due to Obama’s leadership in over 50 years, he would be exactly right.

~

Trump spent more than 100 days in Florida already and the money it’s costing us taxpayers. No one better complain about President Obama. Trump thinks he’s still running against Hillary. That’s all he talks about. It’s over Trump, what don’t you understand? The lock her up chant is for his buddies, they really got locked up. Trump also refused to apologize to the Central Park Five being accused by Trump when they all were innocent. That is the inhumane person Trump is. You republicans can have him!

~

Thank you for your advice but I’m not going to take it. My financial advisor is making me a very wealthy person and when he speaks of no growth under Obama he says to me nothing worth my time or talking about.

~

I will try once more to explain why we have cool weather as the overall climate warms. I am probably wasting my time and column space because our genius president, Donald Trump, has declared global warming a hoax and of course his followers believe him. As I said before, the warm waters of the Pacific ocean warm the air above which rises to the stratosphere, migrates to the north polar region and descends as cold high pressure which pushes the jet stream further south and gives us cooler weather. The media won’t ask a scientist or a climatologist to explain that because it is too simple and weather forecasters need a “few secrets” to secure their jobs.

~

We have an opportunity to experience a couple of unique situations prior to the 2020 elections at the state level. One is the last series of tests related to the five-year contract for Common Core services. The second is the “Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act”. We, the electorate, have real life experiences with the first. Let’s travel the second on a mutually developed common information basis we can share through this column. Initially, we inhabit an object located a varying distance from the source of tremendous energy, this object is comprised of solids, rock and ice; liquids including water and gases in an atmosphere. The condition of the atmosphere is characterized by weather and over a longer period, climate. Let’s share.

Nancy Pelosi is doing it right. She’s tearing down the Trump administration, crooked politician by crooked politician by crooked politician until she gets to Trump. That girl is smart.

~

How are free cars missed in the democratic agenda? They’re giving you everything – houses, food, school, healthcare, and education. Can I go get my new free car now?

~

Round one of the democratic debates. How can Pelosi be proud of that? Not one candidate had an idea to take the country forward. Boring, boring debate! I turned it off after 40 minutes, and then they go after Trump’s economy. Are they kidding? They’ve got nothing! Trump 2020!

An article posted on a website covering the Warren/Sanders platform where both candidates are promoting legislation for paying off existing outstanding student loan debt, now nearly $1.6 trillion, polled College grads of science, technology, engineering, math and humanities majors who are now currently employed and were asked about their own student debt as it relates to this proposed program and their own high cost of obtaining their higher education. Topping their response on “If they had any regrets?” Those with degrees in science, technology, engineering or math majors responded positively and were least likely to report negative regrets. Asking the same of those who had degrees in the humanities, not so much. Where those who had fewer regrets were ones who were enjoying higher salaries in their field. Those getting a degree in the humanities where employment was low paying or were experiencing under employment subject to government funding, felt they were not receiving a return on the cost. Which group will be going all out for a socialistic bailout program and sticking it to those who have a marketable skill? Which group should have invested in a vocational education rather than spending 4-plus years becoming under-employed?

Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me. Republicans only hear “children” and “suffer.”
