Berkshire man arrested for leaving the scene of a June 4 motorcycle accident

On June 4, 2019 at 7:56 a.m., the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle on East Berkshire Road in the Town of Berkshire. As a result of the accident, the sole occupant of the motorcycle, 42-year-old Carl E. Hoaglin Jr. was deceased at the scene from his injuries.

The ensuing investigation revealed that another motorist was involved in the accident and had left the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

On June 21, 2019, the Sheriff’s Office arrested 27-year-old Dylin E. Abbatoy, of Glen Road in Berkshire, for leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, a class D felony, and traffic infractions of moving from lane unsafely and failure to keep right.

According to officers, the investigation revealed Abbatoy had operated a vehicle eastbound in the westbound lane of East Berkshire Road while Hoaglin was traveling westbound, causing Hoaglin to lose control of the motorcycle. Abbatoy then left the scene prior to the arrival of Deputies and failed to report his involvement in the incident to law enforcement.

Abbatoy was arraigned in the Town of Berkshire Court by Justice Dawn Olsen and released under the supervision of the Tioga County Probation Department. Abbatoy is due to return to the Berkshire Town Court on Aug. 19, 2019.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division, Accident Investigation Unit, and Criminal Investigations Division performed the investigation and were assisted at the scene by the Berkshire Fire Department and Richford Fire Department.
