Depot Friday Night Series continues

As the Depot in Newark Valley ushers in its 16th season of live performances at the old railroad station, the first concert will be The Tarps on Friday, June 7. The Tarps, a classic seven-piece rock cover band from the Ithaca, Dryden and Freeville area, is led by Danny Scott on guitar and vocals. This is their 11th year of rocking’ in the Finger Lakes and their seventh year at the Depot.

The band performs with high energy and enthusiasm for the rock and roll music from the 50’s thru the 80’s including Bill Haley, Billy Joel Neil Diamond, Little Richard and Elvis, among others. This band will be playing the songs you will recognize and want to sing along with.

On June 14, Rick Marsi, columnist, author, and naturalist will be at the Depot presenting a fascinating program entitled “Photographing India’s Last Wild Bengal Tigers.” Few sights in nature can rival that of the Bengal tigers in their natural habitat. Rick discovered this while visiting several Indian national parks in which tigers are protected and allowed to roam free. During his visits, he encountered 14 individuals’ cats, some very close to the open jeep in which he photographed them. In addition to meeting multiple tigers, viewers of this program will meet many of birds and mammals that share space with these cats in their world.

On June 21, the Depot welcomes a new group to the Friday Night Series, Hot Dogs & Gin, a five piece band led Doug Hubert on guitar and vocals. Also in the band is his ten year old son Eamonn on guitar and vocals, Steve Shimer on percussion’ Mike Whittemore, keys, guitar and vocals, with Gordie Gottlub on bass.

Hot Dogs & Gin play a wide variety of blues, rock, folk and Irish music. Eamonn is a child prodigy on guitar and at his young age has played extensively around the Southern Tier. Most recently Eamonn was selected to go on tour with the prestigious Broadway National Tour of “School of Rock”. They have played all over the United States from Jacksonville, Fla. to San Jose, Calif. and many cities in-between.

The Depot opens each Friday evening at 6 p.m. and the entertainment begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public and refreshments are always available.

When the weather cooperates, the musical programs are held outside, so bring a lawn chair along. If you would like a copy of the entire Depot Friday Night series, call the Newark Valley Historical Society office at 642-9516 and leave your name and address and they will send you a copy. The schedule is also available on their website, nvhistory.org

This project is made possible, in part with public funds from the NYS Council of the Arts’ Decentralization Program, administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.
