It has been a long and grueling day in the Tioga Terrace neighborhood and on Dorothy Road following an early morning shooting that left a male resident dead, with several gunshot wounds. Now, both suspects in the alleged home invasion have been apprehended.

It began early Thursday morning when a call, according to police, came in around 5 a.m. from a female at the 5 Dorothy Rd. home, who was unharmed.

Police further explained that the intruders fled from the residence, but only one was initially apprehended while the other remained at large. As of this reporting, both are now in custody, although names have not yet been released.

As a precaution, and because of the proximity of the Tioga Hills Elementary School to the Dorothy Road property, school was cancelled on Thursday for safety reasons. On Thursday afternoon, police remained near the school as well and were keeping an around the clock watch.

The officers on the scene early on, offered little information, simply stating that they will search for the intruder until they find him, and they will find him. And they did. It was within hours of this conversation that it was reported that the second intruder, or person of interest, was in custody.

While there, we spoke with a nearby neighbor on the scene.

Jo Hoppes lives right around the corner from where the incident occurred. She talked about the early morning hours on Thursday, and of how the neighbors heard screaming, and then heard shots fired.

As a 50 year resident in that area, she described the neighborhood as quiet, and having lovely neighbors. But all that changed Thursday morning.

A real estate listing was found for the home in question that was from February 2019. In the photo, the home appeared to have no personal belongings; it appeared vacant.

Hoppes explained that new tenants had moved into the home recently, but she had not met them.

Other neighbors driving by were asking what happened, and were not privy to the situation.

The neighbors also didn’t express concern, at that time, over having an intruder at large. In fact, Hoppes herself stated, “If I saw him, I would invite him in for coffee; and then I would tell him he needs to find the Lord. That is the problem today.”

Another resident, who remained anonymous, felt, at that time, that the second intruder was long gone, and that there was not need to worry.

Members of the New York State Police, Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and the Tioga County District Attorney were at the scene on Thursday.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

This story continues to develop.
