Readers’ Column for the week of April 21, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

There is no way my tax dollars should be given to any business that is not current on their taxes. That’s why we are all taxed too much now, because they keep giving it away with no promise of return.

Village of Newark Valley board member vacancy; there is an opening for the village board, if interested contact the mayor, it’s up to him to appoint a new member. We need some fresh ideas to keep village moving forward.

~

To the Mayor of Newark Valley: If in 2018 we borrowed money for a year for ladder factory demolition and we paid interest (I believe it was 12,500 for a year) are we going to pay another years’ interest again? And how much will this cost the taxpayers of the village? Please reply in the village newsletter and let us, who pay taxes see the dollar amount (open and honest transparency). On the topic of zombie properties, the village barn is looking a little rough around the edges (roof / paint / window sills / doors /siding / over all appearance. If there is an importance of keeping up buildings of historic value (municipal building windows), then why not the village barn? If there is a plan for some TLC let’s hear about it, if there isn’t why not use some of our 100,000 reserve to keep this old building from getting to the point of no return instead of burning it all on windows for the municipal building! Last but not least, the DPW did an outstanding job cleaning streets (thanks for doing it when it was wet) and picking up leaves and brush! THANK YOU!

~

This is to the people that like to leave their dogs tied out or run loose, and they bark excessively; please stop! People want to enjoy their life. There are people that have to go to work, and the dog is disrupting their sleep. You don’t do anything, and you don’t care. You just tie it out, go to work, and tie it out. Be responsible! The dog is tied out! Is that legal? Nobody does anything, because nobody cares. Care, please. Do something, and put your dog back in the house. Think of other people.

~

This is to the person that commented on the people that go on and on and on. You say that comments should be 50 words or less, your comment is 56 words.

The Town of Owego, a couple of weeks ago, went to the Apalachin Creek behind Billings Road on the other side of Main Street and they tried to repair something and dig it out, and they made it worse; it floods worse than ever. They spent a lot of money to do it, and I would like the readers to know they are wasting our money. It’s been done for a couple of weeks, and this is the first storm where we got water, and now it floods up to the road. They tried to fix it so it would stop the sewer from washing up, but now it’s worse than ever.

This is regarding the chair lift that someone wanted to know about. Penn York Medical Supplies is located in Binghamton, and their number is 773-3622.

~

The New York State Legislators voted to give illegal aliens money for their legal fees; and yet the Gold Star Family tuition, free tuition for family members of veterans killed in the line of duty is held by vote in the Assembly of Higher Education Committee. All committee republicans voted not to hold it; the democrats are holding it up. It won’t reach the floor for a full vote without their say so. Come on democrats! Your priorities for our state and country are way out of order. Our fallen soldiers and their families have earned this consideration. Let’s make it happen by calling our state legislators.

No matter how much you can diet and BOTOX it, you aren’t going to stop the march of time. That’s a fact.

~

I just finished reading this column, and there are ten comments that are general public information and there are 17 political comments. I really feel this is overkill, and I feel that we should be publishing more of the positive comments. All this political stuff is overkill; they beat it to death. I called in about a restaurant in Johnson City, it’s new – I told you I had a sandwich that was made with grass fed beef. If this continues to happen, I won’t be reading the column anymore.

Some people shouldn’t have dogs. They need food, water, care, and love.

~

I can’t believe the amount of stupid money New York State wasted on the Route 434 crosswalk to nowhere. It’s really sad. They should have used that money to repave Route 17 Westbound in the Lounsberry area, which is a disgrace, and Route 17 Eastbound from Owego to Apalachin is also a disgrace. It’s pretty sad how bad those roads have been. Route 434 from the Broome – Tioga County line Westbound is also in desperate need of resurfacing. Hopefully some politician will read this and can do something about it because the county certainly deserves it.

Some in Syracuse say they want these migrants up in Syracuse; have they looked at their crime rate lately?

~

When is someone going to replace all the street light bulbs that are out on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin? The old lights were working fine and they had to go and change them to these “more efficient” bulbs that have not even lasted a year. I have called three times about the light out near me and still nothing. Why is the town too busy? There hasn’t been any plowing, sanding, salting, mowing or anything else going on around, but they still can’t change a few light bulbs. Isn’t this why we pay taxes? Please get out here and replace these bulbs!

~

Welcome to New York, the Empire of Giveaway State. Felon? Illegal Immigrant? No problem. Here’s a free college education. If you think of it, thank a hard working, taxpaying middle class citizen. Pay it back? No, just don’t forget to vote for those that gave all of this to you.

For pity’s sake, we are worried sick about plastic straws and bags, yet allow ourselves to be brainwashed by salespeople into ripping out perfectly repairable windows and filling the landfills for no good reason. This is extreme vandalism; why would anyone erase such a visual part of a building’s history to replace it with an inferior element? Historic original windows were custom made by hand by a skilled human to exactly fit each opening by using hand tools; thus, not only custom fit, but made to be repaired. They are made of old growth hardwood, something that is rapidly becoming extinct. The glass was hand blown, adding character and uniqueness to every pane-soul. A well fitting, properly insulated, weather striped and insulated historic window is very cost effective – the cost of replacement windows eliminates the meager energy savings. There are numerous salvage yards with old windows to use for parts or to replace a sash, if necessary. Additionally, the process used to manufacture a new, non-repairable replacement window to install in an opening with size and adjoining materials unsuited for it takes an unnecessary toll on our environment. Contact Janna Rudler of the Preservation League of New York State for advice and all kinds of help – there are people in our area who do this kind of repair. She can be reached at 296-0329. A municipal (or any building on a historic register) should be eligible for financial help and she will be happy to give guidance; in fact, replacing an original window unnecessarily with unsuitable windows could negate financial help for future repairs of any kind.

National Political Viewpoints

Do you Democrats have any idea how nasty and hateful you look! ROAR!

~

We can say separation of church and state because the constitution requires that. First amendment if you want to look it up. We can say, “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States,” because the constitution says that. Main body if you want to look it up. It’s not something that was made up recently. The founding fathers put it into the constitution on purpose due to having been living under England’s official state religion and seeing the conflicts around the world that are created when a religion tries to govern a state or require that everyone adhere to its particular beliefs.

~

People keep saying Trump lies; who lied about Russian collusion? Stupid democrats.

~

Webster’s Dictionary describes hypocrite as an insincere person; one who pretends to be someone they are not. I think that Donald Trump is the greatest president we have ever had, and when he wanted to relocate the illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, like Pelosi’s San Francisco, they immediately didn’t want it. They don’t want illegal aliens in their sanctuary cities. Them people are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites and phonies. That means you, democrat liberal. You are nothing but hypocrites. If you love illegal aliens so much, take them home and feed them; take care of their medical bills. Maybe a nice family of 50 or 60 of them. Bring them to your house.

~

I don’t think Mick Jagger rolls his own pennies, but what I do find mildly amusing is that he chose to have his heart surgery in the United States. He is a dual citizen, but he is from a country where Bernie’s Medicare For All is offered. He probably knew he would have to wait a long time to get that surgery, and he wanted it and needed it done immediately. No Medicare For All. It’s the worst thing that the Left can do to the American people.

~

I wonder why the Owego Pennysaver doesn’t print anything about the democrats and all the crooked stuff they do; but when it comes to Donald Trump and the Republicans, you guys print all the garbage. Is there bias in the Owego Pennysaver?

~

I am calling in response to the person who wrote in about the democrats in congress. They need to get back to their jobs that they are getting paid for. That’s what we have them in there for. Let’s move on. Get past all that other stuff that has failed. Move on, and take care of what we want done.

~

In response to last week’s caller – yes, my wife and I both benefited from the new Trump tax plan. Our income tax was about $1,000 less this year, and we made about 20 percent more on our income. Yes, the Trump tax plan works very well for us. And, unless you were in a coma for the past three years, as far as economics and job outlooks, things are good. And we got a COLA increase because of President Trump. So wake up, quit whining. Trump is doing a good thing for the country.

~

Steven Miller, who is Trump’s Policy Advisor and Right Hand Man, is just a communication writer and writes speeches. I believe he runs Trump and everything Trump does. So far it has not been good and smart for this country. Also, Wilbur Ross, he should be in a nursing home already. A nursing home could use his money.

~

Talk about a dog with a bone. Those democrats will not let go. Get over it. The Mueller report is out; no collusion, which we knew years ago. We wasted $25 million in taxpayer dollars; get over it and move on to the issues that mean something to the people of the United States. Build that wall, or put the people in your sanctuary cities.

~

We didn’t have to spend $25 million to find out the truth with the Mueller report. Now what I’m waiting for is an apology from all of the fake news networks. Do you know how long that will take?

~

Mueller report is out, so it’s time for the Obama Administration to come clean. I hope we find out who was really responsible for this collusion, Clinton at the top.

~

I understand different strains of measles and infections that are hard to treat are coming into the U.S. from the immigrants.

“The F-35 is not just a bad plane that costs too much. It is a symptom of the mindset that is eating this country, and the world, alive. ‘Misplaced priorities’ is a kind euphemism. Ours is a society that condones and even celebrates organized, profitable, global murder. The money we’ve shoveled into this bottomless hole is nothing more than a tangible symbol of all the opportunities we have wasted, a visible price tag for the missed chances of a damaged existence.” The F-35 Fighter Jet Will Cost $1.5 Trillion. It’s Time for New Priorities — Op-ed by William Rivers Pitt.

~

Socialists got their money the same way the capitalists did. They worked for it. The difference is that socialists think it’s a good thing to pool resources to build a better life for all while the conservatives seem to think they should get to keep everything for themselves and to $*#$ with everyone else. Maybe you need to realize that things like the benefits, dinners, or golf tournaments to help someone in need are a form of socialism to get the concept.

~

AOC and the Democrats pretend they are so upset over babies being ripped from their mother’s arms at the border. Why is it they don’t care at all about the 3,000 babies, EACH DAY, that are being ripped from their mother’s womb by abortion? HYPOCRITES! ROAR!

~

How come the media isn’t telling us of the diseases the illegal aliens are bringing into this country by way of our southern border? Why are we not made aware that doctors in Texas who are attempting to deal with this disaster are being threatened with jail time if they make people aware of this fact? Kind of makes a case for the building of a wall, doesn’t it?

~

Simple question. If it were not for capitalism, where would Socialism get the money to finance their loony ideas?

~

What a hoot! Rachel Maddow of MSNBC has been non-stop President Trump bashing. When A.G. Barr made the statement that there was no evidence of collusion with Russia, Rachel Maddow’s rating went down 13 percent. But, MSNBC’s rating went down 35 percent. This, to the point where Ms. Maddow may well lose her position, MSNBC may well go off the air! Hoorah! I venture no one will miss either!

~

The problems in Venezuela are not caused by its Socialist government as much as the price of oil. Their entire economy, including government revenue, was based on $100+ per barrel oil; when the price plummeted below 40 there was bound to be a disaster. Imagine if our federal revenue was cut in half.

~

Sarah Sanders says democrats aren’t smart enough to get Mr. Trump’s tax returns. How immature and childish. We need some real adults in the White House instead of the nonsensical smart*%& answers.

~

Well the Democrats have put down President Trump for separating families and putting them in cages. I think Obama was the first one to put them in these so-called cages for their safety.  Gavin Newson and other Democrats want open borders and want all illegals to be let in. Now that President Trump suggested sending the illegals to Sanctuary cities, the democrats have called this an immoral act by the president. The Dems are the ones who said all are welcome, so they need to step up or shut up. Just saw a statement from Cher, who lives in California, and she said that California can’t take care of all the homeless people (many who are Veterans) they have now let alone take in the illegals. Well Cher, why don’t you and all your Hollywood cronies who make it a daily thing to bad mouth and put down the President when ever they can do something about your homeless in California. Maybe it’s time you work with the President Trump. President Trump has tried to do everything he spoke about in his campaign and is trying hard to get it all done, but from the get go the Democrats have shut him down because they don’t like him. Thanks for letting me vent and God bless our men and women who are serving and have served and died giving us this right to voice our opinion.
