Readers’ Column for the week of April 14, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The phone number, 773-3822, for information on the stair chair was incorrect. Does someone have another number we could try? Thank you.

Is it true that the committee in charge of the $10 million that Owego has is considering proposals from individuals and businesses to upgrade and improve the value of properties that are already behind in their taxes? How are they expecting them to pay taxes after they are raised because of the improvements?

Just drove from the Tioga county line west to Sayre and back on Rt. 17. The condition of this road is a disgrace, both coming and going. It has seemed to me for some time that we are second-class citizens in Tioga County as far as state roads are concerned.

Try driving into Tioga from Broome on either 17 or 434 and the road conditions are like night and day. The minute you cross into Tioga the roads become horrible. This is not a recent development as it has been like that for as far back as I can remember. I can’t help but wonder why the state treats our county so poorly when it comes to road maintenance. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that Albany doesn’t appreciate the way we vote. Although I must admit they did spend a bunch of money on the stupid crosswalks to nowhere on 434 that no one uses.

Attention Village of Newark Valley residents. The mayor is on the replacement of windows on the municipal building kick again! Being a historical building it requires that they all stay original, meaning that the single pane glass stays. We will get a grant of approximately $130,000.00 (everyone’s tax dollars) and use $100,000.00 (our tax dollars) of building fund. With a building of its age (I would assume very hard to heat) it would be better served to put in energy efficient windows (try to get some return on investment). Ask yourself this, if you were replacing the windows in your own home would you put the original glass back in, makes no sense! I hope the board members use their common sense and vote this down and look for an alternative, variance, or a different avenue to take! To the woman I talked to on the phone about this subject a few months back, could you please get me your number again. Please voice your opinion (pro or con) to our mayor or board members. REMEMBER THIS – IT’S OUR TAX DOLLARS!

I heard the old Sanmina plant on Taylor Road in Owego is being considered for a big HEMP Manufacturing Company.

I think the Pennysaver should not print these comments that are so very long that go on and on and on. I, for one, do not read them. I think whoever is calling them in needs to get to the point, get your message across in 50 words or less, because no one is reading these comments.

~

The people at Ye Old Country Florist in Owego are the nicest people! I had trouble with my houseplants and they gladly took care of the situation to help me out. They are always friendly and nice to talk to, a great business in our community!

~

Several people told me about the abandoned mother cat and kittens on Smith Creek Road in Lounsberry. So, I checked my game trail cameras, which I use to stop trespassers, poachers and people who dump tires. I have several photos of your vehicle on my roadside camera, which I have shared with locals and authorities.

New York has finally banned plastic bags. Using plastic in disposables is wrong. In order to make New York even better, the use of plastic should be banned for all non-carbonated drinks such as water, milk, juice, etc. We should go back to the waxed paper containers still used for items such as half & half and heavy cream. All carbonated beverages and liquids such as cleaning fluids, bleach, ammonia, window cleaner, etc. should be sold in glass containers. Plastic should also be eliminated from disposable diapers, or they should be banned. Not only do disposable diapers pollute the landfills, but they are a health hazard as well to the trash and waste workers. Will this be more expensive – yes in the short run – but if we want to have a better, cleaner state this is what we need to do. Think about all the wasteful use of plastic in your life. Write to your New York representatives and beseech them to put an end to this madness in New York.

I just want to thank the recycle guy who comes on Wednesday on Mt. Pleasant in Nichols. He is so good; he brings my recycle tub in and puts it away for me.

National Political Viewpoints

Ponder this, if it wasn’t for capitalism where would the socialists get their money to run for President?

~

What a hoot! In a recent poll, candidates from other states beat Elizabeth Warren in her own state and town. Guess that’s one less Socialist Loon taking up airtime with her blather!

~

Mr. Trump says the borders are full and the country is full. I know who else is full, and you know of what.

~

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I think of the time and money wasted on this silly witch-hunt, it makes me want to vote the whole bunch out of office. These congressional hearings are nothing more than an opportunity for politicians to grandstand and get their faces in front of yet another camera! Nonsense!

~

“Not convinced America is in crisis yet? Think about this. At the Department of Defense, 25 percent of key positions as of April 1 remain unfilled, according to The Washington Post and the Partnership for Public Service. At the State Department, that number jumps to 39 percent. Homeland Security: 44 percent. Granted, some percentage of those are nominated and awaiting Senate confirmation, but if Democrats are holding them up, there’s reason to believe it’s the quality of the nominee that’s the problem, given Trump’s record. As The Post notes, there are currently 140 key positions requiring Senate confirmation for which the Trump administration has never nominated anyone.” America in crisis: The Trump administration is in shambles and disintegrating right before our eyes.” — Alternet

Can someone tell me please, why Donald Trump is into President Netanyahu’s business and President Putin is into Robert Mueller’s business. Is there anyone minding the store in America; other than the state of emergency about the caravan who we are still waiting to arrive. What is going on?

~

Certain Leftist Loonies like to label others as Racist, Fascist, and NAZI. Socialist / Communist Vladimir Lenin coined the term “Useful Idiots”. He was referring to his commies. If the uneducated and low IQ Liberal nuts would look at Communist China today, they would understand what their smears really mean. It is criminal that our education system has failed us so badly.

~

He always amazes me; refused to release his taxes after saying he would, doesn’t want the Mueller report revealed to the public after saying go ahead and show it. And the big one, the border issues after separating the children from parents is now President Obama’s fault. Amazing!

~

It’s about time the democrats in congress step up and earn their paychecks and do the job they were hired for. The fake Russian collusion failed, the Stormy Daniels story failed, Kavanaugh story failed, and the border crisis is not failing. Now they are going after his taxes, which he does not have to provide to them. I for one don’t care about anyone else’s taxes; I have mine own to worry about. I’m sick and tired of the Democrat rich fat cats who are providing buses, food, and clothing for the immigrants to come over here illegally to get our free stuff that we have worked hard for all our lives. I don’t care if they come over here, but work for it and do it legally like my grandparents did. Now they are blaming President Trump and K. Nielsen for the border crisis. It’s the foreign leaders who are telling their people that they will have a better life in America, and the illegal’s, who themselves are at fault. Common sense will tell you that you have to work for what you want. I don’t want to hear that the illegals have no common sense. They know what they are doing. God Bless America and our men and women who have fought and died defending our rights for us to voice our views and live our lives as best we can.

~

News Flash! The U.S. Border holding facilities can only accommodate 2,000 captured illegal aliens. A migrant crisis by border authorities is considered 4,000 captured illegals. Presently about 13,000 captured illegals, estimates are now at 100,000 illegals, come across the border every month with about 10,000 of these being unaccompanied children. That’s 1.2 million illegals per year! The dimwit Marxist Democrats know this is an obvious crisis but they want open borders and more future voters. We are headed for disaster and civil war if this lunacy continues. President Trump must act and way before another year goes by.

Trump lies 22 times per day now. Something is very, very wrong with him. It’s not funny anymore. It was funny when he called the CEO of Apple, Mr. Apple; now doesn’t that show you people how smart he really is. This is not right for our country.

~

I’m sick and tired of reading about Trump. If you wanted to vote him out you should have done that a long time ago. I think you should be concentrating more on Cuomo and what he’s doing to the United States and to New York State about the structure of the roads, the potholes, the crime, the people who are coming into the cities they are letting people go. Why don’t they start talking about the real things in life, health insurance, people whom fraud Medicare, the robo calls on the phone. There is so much more to complain about or to look into rather than leave Trump alone. If you don’t support him, fine, but you should leave him alone and let someone else take care of his business; like Congress, let them handle it. Just let it go.

~

As Rodney King in California said years ago, “Why can’t we all get along”? Most Republicans writing in, they’re just putting down the dams left and right. We are supposed to be neighbors, not fighting and bickering like people are. As far as the person wanting to know why the president lies so much, because he has to win at everything. He’s got to be the best in his mind; he walks all over everybody. Just look at the story about the people playing golf with him, and how he cheats all the time and everything. How can you believe anything he says? I know I’m supposed to have respect for the president, but I have a hard time having respect for someone that lies every single day to the public that he is supposed to be helping. I’m sorry, and by the way, I’m not a Dem., I’m an Independent.

~

So our crooked president won’t release his taxes. What’s he hiding? You know he’s hiding something. He’s the first president in over 40 years to not show his taxes. He really needs to show his taxes because he may be compromised and looking out for the best interest for himself and not the country. You know he is a crook, you know he is crooked, so you people better start pressing your congressmen and make him show his taxes. You people who still support him, you’re just as much of a moron as he is.

~

I would like to know how the Trump tax plan has benefitted our readers.

~

Do you remember when Sean Penn and Danny Glover were spending a lot of time on talk shows? Talking about how wonderful Socialism was? Well, now that Venezuela has fallen on really hard times, those people down there are suffering. In Brazil, it’s beginning to crack. What happened to Sean and Danny? Have they disappeared into the woodwork?

~

In 2016 the FBI opened a criminal investigation on the Trump campaign. Now the questions are: Who initiated it? What was the evidence to start it? Why was it started? Why were the FISA warrant judges hoodwinked and who provided evidence for the warrants? Go Attorney General Barr!

~

Why didn’t Howard Schultz run for New York State governor? He would have defeated hands down the nation’s highest paid Governor Cuomo very easily. Howard Schultz will not beat Mr. Trump if he decides to run but I’m sure he would have made a wonderful New York State governor.
