Readers’ Column for the week of April 7, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The Board of Trustees of Newark Valley Hope Cemetery asks that you please remove winter weary decorations from the cemetery no later than Sunday, April 20. This includes artificial flowers/plants that are faded, worn, and damaged as well as potted plants that are no longer living and any broken pots or ornaments. Anything that meets these criteria and is left will be removed and disposed of. Thank you for your help in keeping our cemetery looking nice!

I don’t enjoy negative comments any more than most people. But some things can’t be ignored. The plastic bag ban, which goes into effect in March 2020, is a good thing. LONG overdue. People in many countries throughout the world have been carrying purchases home in cloth/reusable bags for decades. So far I’ve heard mostly whining and complaining of ‘how inconvenient’ this ban is and ‘how difficult an adjustment’ it will be. We are a nation of spoiled brats. This is our opportunity to make a positive, personal change to help heal the environment. Maybe too little too late, but it certainly can’t make it worse.

It would be wise to understand the criminal justice system, the rules of evidence, and the rights of defendants. Why? Because some day it could be you or a family member that has been charged.

The movie “Unplanned” is now playing. Check out the local theaters as to which ones. Early demand despite the “R” rating hasn’t stopped “Unplanned.” The objections cast has instead validated the film’s premise on abortion. Said by the actress playing the part of the abortionist nurse based her true story, “We don’t have nudity, we don’t have sex, we don’t have language, so the only thing they could give us an ‘R’ for is violence. So that means they agree that abortion is a violent and disturbing act.” Though you can have an abortion at age 16 without parental consent in New York, the irony is you need to be 17 to see what actually takes place.

On Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m., I was traveling approximately 30MPH heading East on Route 17C near MJs restaurant. A later model black 4-door Jeep was traveling in the opposite direction (West) and crossed the double yellow line and was heading straight at me. I got over as far as I could to my right and laid on my brakes to try avoiding a head-on collision. The Jeep clipped my left rear quarter panel before swerving back across into his own lane, but it did not stop. A hit and run; this took about 3 seconds of time. I hope whoever did this is reading this – you need to PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE, and stop texting or dialing while you are driving before you kill someone or yourself. Although my car is damaged, I feel really lucky this was not a head on collision. I will forever be watching for you now. Please put your phone down while driving, it’s not worth causing a head on (or any other type) of collision. No one is capable of texting safely while driving.

National Political Viewpoints

How can you say “Separation of Church and State” when God and God’s word was the driving force in the creation of our country? From the Pilgrims to the Founding Fathers along with great scholars from the past and present, a Constitutional Republic type of government was formed. This type of government never existed before, and now people were able to live where they had freedom of Life, Liberty, and Property. It was also the first time a civil society was created where the people and government were operating together under one leader, God, where they were able to exercise their inalienable rights given by God. This is why you cannot separate Church and State for our type of government. Our country was founded as one country under God. However, the Progressive Liberals have been fighting this ever since the founding of our nation with its goal of destroying us. As you can see from the corruption in our government, politics, fake news, propaganda in our schools and colleges, and our institutions mostly run by the Progressive Liberals. What a mess they have made since they don’t have God as their leader. It is time, with God as our leader, to fight back. Psalm 62:1… “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.” Our Judeo Christian churches need to band together and speak as one voice. The church is there to provide God fearing honorable people to run the government. The government is there to protect the Church, our people and our Country.

Are there any more ways this state can get money out of us? First of all, they made sure we would have to spend hundreds of dollars to get that stupid engine light off to pass inspection, and if you can’t then you have to buy another car. Next they’re banning plastic bags. Now here’s where I get really mad and disgusted with these idiots that come up with these stupid ideas. Now they want to FINE people $200 for feeding feral cats. People feed them out of the goodness of their hearts and pay with their own money. First of all, there wouldn’t be all these stray cats if it weren’t for the heartless people who drop off their cats or leave them behind. As far as diseases and bad air we breathe, has anyone ever been to Seneca Falls, N.Y. and smelled the gas coming from the Seneca Meadows landfill? That’ll be the day I let any animal, cat, or dog go hungry. So, does this mean we should stop feeding the homeless too because there are too many? Where has all the compassion gone? It’s all about money in their pockets. So if we let all the cats, dogs and homeless people go hungry then the state can have more money to make our lives better? Give me a break!

Mr. Trump announced he was going to close the southern border within a week and was NOT kidding around. Then he decided to give Mexico a full year to resolve the drug issue or he would make good on his threat. Then he announced he was going to cancel the Obamacare health insurance and not apply a new plan until 2020, and after the election. He seems to have such issues with his timelines fluctuating from day to day. The only thing he followed through on was the shut down that cost American citizens billions of dollars. What a dealmaker!

~

Does anyone have an opinion as to why this administration feels the need to repeatedly lie? What are all the lies about?

~

Trump’s sanction war has, according to the U.S. Treasury, cost the economy $1.4 billion a month, if he closes the Mexican border that will add $2 billion a day to the losses. If Trump had a brain he wouldn’t know what to do with it.

Under cover of night, Boss Cuomo gave himself a 39 percent raise and levying on you ever more insidious little taxes. No Dem in the legislature said BOO. There is never enough for the gluttons at the trough. You would think that with all those immediately around Boss Cuomo going to jail he would have accumulated enough graft in the form of treasure and political favors and might be satisfied. New York government takes care of New York government. Would you like a tax-exempt pension? You have to ask why you need to pay more for the dilapidated New York City trains and tunnels. Previously it was New York government that made me feel dirty. My view has changed; voters are responsible for the institutionalized corruption. A parasite knows better than to kill its host.

Easy to see why the Socialist Dems are out to help end Joe Biden’s run for President. He’s ahead of them all in the polls, so of course they want him gone; no matter what can cause that to happen, they’re all on board with anything that makes him go away.

Build the “Wall” to stop drugs? Oh, come on! Let’s be clear about one thing. All political B.S. to the contrary, no wall, no matter how tall or how long, is going to stop illicit drugs from coming into this country. No immigrant coming to the OS border, seeking asylum is going to be carrying drugs, nor are more than a tiny handful of them criminals. In fact, the overwhelming majority of people crossing the border, legally or illegally are NOT criminals carrying drugs (not including motor vehicles, which frequently get drugs through customs with ease). Even if every individual crossing from Mexico into the U.S. was carrying a pound of pure cocaine, it would probably not equal in a YEAR what comes in by other means EVERY DAY. Drug traffickers are very smart. They use many other means of smuggling drugs into the U.S. that are more practical, efficient, and safer (for them). Tunnels, planes, cars, trucks, boats, even submarines, in some documented cases, are used to bring in literally tons of drugs daily. So let’s drop the pretense (ATTN: POTUS) that the wall will make even the slightest dent in the illicit drug smuggling problem. Now, if the government spent $5 to 8 billiion on stopping the drug traffic, instead of building a ridiculous and useless wall, that MIGHT make a difference. But the estimates of the real cost to do that are as much as hundreds of times more. So the government (Donald and friends) want us to concentrate on “The Wall” instead, while drug smugglers continue business as usual. Meanwhile, big pharmaceutical companies get away with manufacturing and selling highly addictive prescription drugs, within the U.S., by using misleading and sometimes false claims of their safety, and funneling tens of millions of dollars into campaign finance. They are a very real criminal element that is operating in plain sight within our borders, that no wall of any size will control. And like most criminal enterprises, they make sure that “certain” people in government keep looking the other way while they do it. Individuals and some states are suing Big Pharma and winning settlements against them. It is past time we addressed that problem and leave needful immigrants alone.

Speaking of meddling in the affairs of a sovereign country, the U.S. needs to take a look in the mirror, how many countries do we send propaganda into trying to get regime changes and when that doesn’t work we finance a coup that also is failing. So instead of Russia being sanctioned, the rest of the world needs to sanction the U.S. for its aggressive behavior.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has once again demonstrated her grasp of reality. In a recent speech, she stated that Congress had amended the Constitution with the 22nd Amendment so that FDR could not be President for yet another term. Interesting, because FDR had died two years before this Amendment saw the light of day! Don’t take my word for it, Google it yourself! Shows what a modern Liberal education does for you!

What is good for the goose, it’s good for the gander. Attorney General William Barr needs to now name special counsels to investigate the endless scandals of the Democrats. It’s time to investigate Russia-gate, the FISA scandal, naming and prosecution of the scandalous FBI and DOJ officials who perpetrated this collusion hoax and then name a special counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, the Uranium One deal and the Barack Obama IRS scandal and then pursue their findings that ties in Hillary to Obama, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Loretta Lynch, John Brennan, James Clapper, Ben Rhodes and anyone else who so they find who attached by their ego to criminal misdeeds to undermine a fair election. In other words; Cook Their Goose.

~

Barr’s summary statement that the special prosecutor could not establish collusion does NOT mean that there was no attempt by the Russians to influence the election. It did NOT become a “total Russian hoax” as the president has stated. The Barr letter stated two things about obstruction. One: the special prosecutor stated the evidence “does not exonerate” the president and Two: Barr stated that it didn’t rise to the level needed for a successful prosecution. Translation: there IS some evidence of attempts to obstruct. There have been several successful prosecutions of things discovered. There have been indictments of Russians. There are known meetings between Russians and campaign staff members including Trump family members, content unsure as there is no way to verify or dispute what the participants have claimed. There is no “total exoneration” as the president has claimed. We shall have to wait for the whole report to see what evidence is there and the basis for the prosecution decisions.

The U.S. arrogance is out of control, passing laws and expecting the sovereign countries to follow them; if they don’t the U.S. will threaten, demand, bully and sanction them. The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act is just an example, the U.S. has deemed that the Venezuela citizens aren’t capable of electing a president so we appoint one that we can control, now they are telling the EU countries to add more sanctions on Venezuela because the U.S. isn’t getting their own way. The sanctions that have been applied to many countries is inflicting pain and suffering to already suffering countries; would we like it if our former allies did this to the U.S., no. Also, as a side note, the U.S. is losing about 1.4 billion a month because of the sanctions as of November, who is being punished for not obeying the U.S. dictators.

Has anyone else noticed that President Trump isn’t acting like an innocent man who was vindicated but more like a guilty one who got away with something?
