Lenten Study on Reclaiming Jesus, Green Book Movie and Prayer and Pretzels

The First Presbyterian Union Church, at the corner of North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego, has three upcoming special events to which the public is invited.

On Sunday mornings starting at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for the Lenten season, adult groups are discussing the ecumenical “Reclaiming Jesus:  A Confession of Faith in Times of Crisis.” The statement addresses six of the most pressing dangers to the Christian faith: the rise of racism, the mistreatment of women, the treatment of the poor and vulnerable; dishonesty in political and civil life, misuse of power that threatens democracy, and the tendency to put ourselves first before others.

On Saturday, March 16 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a free showing of “Green Book,” winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

“Green Book”is a 2018 American biographical comedy-drama film set in 1962, inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South by African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga, an Italian-American bouncer who served as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard.  Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.

Come early at 5:00 p.m. for a “Dish to Pass” (Potluck) Dinner. If possible, plan to bring a main course, a side dish/salad, or a dessert to share (you can make them or buy something prepared at a store or restaurant). All are invited.

On Sunday, March 17 at 11:15 a.m., there will be “Pretzels and Prayers,” an intergenerational time for making soft pretzels and child-friendly activities about prayer.

Additional information on these events for the public can be found on the church website, www.owegofpuc.org, or by calling (607) 744-0761.
