A group of local residents are planning a Candor Pinewood Derby, which will consist of children, with family adult help, shaping, carving, painting and racing miniature wooden cars.
The event will take place on July 3, and as part of the Candor 4th of July festivities.
Following the derby rules and cheering on friends teaches sportsmanship and good citizenship. Personal achievement comes to any child who picks up a woodworking tool and shapes raw wood into a sleek design. Teamwork in the building of the cars is experienced.
While building the fastest car is one of the rewards, it’s also about having family fun and spending valuable quality time together.
They are also planning for the under age seven racers to compete in matchbox racing and possibly have adult/child teams in the pinewood events. There will be workshops where families may bring their cars for expert hands-on guidance.
They will kick off with an informational meeting and a showing of the family film, Down and Derby, at the Village Chapel, 28 Main St., Candor, on March 9 at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
You can find videos on YouTube under “Pinewood Derby” that will give you a better idea of what the event will be like.
Lead sponsorship is provided by the Candor 4th of July Celebration Committee with the help of the venue – the Allen Memorial Baptist Church, the Candor Community Services Corp., The Village Chapel, the Candor Booster Club, Kazon Cards and Games, and 07 Racing Collectables.
Hopefully this will become an annual event for the families of the Candor community.
