Readers’ Column for the week of January 27, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

To the individual inquiring about the status of your Home Energy Assistance application, you can call Social Services at 687-8300 and get an update. Once an eligibility determination has been made from the local district, the letters and payments are made from the state directly to your vendor. Payments are often very large and they account for a large amount of clients. Therefore, it can take vendors up to 30 days to post.

Could not wait to get a new laptop so I could send this in. You know those super bright LED blue headlights that for some reason are legal? The ones that allow you to see your own retina? I hate those. In fact, I am proud to say every time one of “those” are driving towards me, I turn on my high beams, and leave them on until that person passes me. I mean, you are literally blinding every driver on the road, just so you can see into the future while you drive, so it only seems fair. Those lights should be illegal! Who’s with me?

~

This is just a note to say how Tops Market in Owego goes above and beyond to satisfy their customers. Every Saturday I stop to pick up Donuts and cookies for my co-workers, the last couple times there have been no donuts as I guess they changed the baking schedule. The manager on duty must have heard me asking the clerk about it. About an hour later the manager drove his own vehicle and brought donuts and baked goods to my workplace. That is customer satisfaction! I wish I had taken his name down but I know he is there every Saturday morning. Thanks again to Tops Market. Not only do they have great employees, but they also have the best donuts around!

~

Thank you for the 2019 calendar; also, many thanks for the FREE PENNYSAVER each week.

~

Congratulations to the Owego Apalachin School District Administration on getting the capital project passed by the district residents. The vote count was 271 for and 225 against, not an overwhelming majority. Conducting a vote for a $24 million project in mid-January virtually guarantees low voter turnout because of weather, as well as missing the individuals who winter elsewhere. It just seems to border on bad faith. No one can tell me that this strategy was not discussed by the administration and with our school board, now 43 percent, which are ex teachers. The district has pulled a fast one on us, and we will be paying higher taxes when there aren’t enough students to justify all the school buildings that we will still be paying off. Taxpayers beware!

~

Regarding the accidents down on Route 96 in Catatonk – when there is a detour it’s up on Anderson Hill and there should be some law enforcement up there. They drive like it’s a racetrack. There will be accidents up here before you know it.

~

Project 3T- How many of them; elected, selected or hired have chosen to take part in Project 3T? Give them a call. If they are not interested in revisiting their childhood – why not?

~

Great news! Our little senior dog needed help. We were recommended to the Milan Veterinary Clinic on Route 220 in Milan, Pa. The doctor and staff were more than great. They really cared to make our little dog comfortable and happy during his stressful surgery. The results were better than expected. Thanks again Dr. Fisher and staff.

~

Thank you Visions Federal Credit Union for honoring us veterans with free new programs you now offer for military veterans. As a United States Marine Corp Veteran I want to thank Visions Federal Credit Union for this service.

~

Thank you to the Gods of snowplowing and more especially to the person who plowed our driveway a 6 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21. I don’t know who you are or if you will ever read this, but it was a REAL surprise and thank you very much! Please call me.

~

I’m inquiring if anybody knows where they’re going to be holding the AARP tax program? Thank you for your replies.

~

We on Maple Lane want to thank the Owego road crew for the great job they did plowing the snow away. They took it away early and salted all night so we were able to get out with no problem. Thanks again!

~

Just want to give a big thank you to my family, Barb Hill, Carly and Ray Reynolds for plowing me out, shoveling me out; and for my brother, Garth Hill, for fixing my atomic clock so I know what the weather is out there. I love them all!

~

Marijuana is not addictive. You don’t overdose on it. I smoke it once in a while, just when I have a hard day and it’s stressful. It relaxes me, helps me sleep at night and it helps me concentrate. Smoking and alcohol is legal, that’s worse for you than marijuana. Come on New York; make it legal!

~

It is Thursday, Jan. 24 and it is 5 a.m., and New York State notified that 10 million gallons of raw sewage is once again dumped in the Susquehanna River and this is coming from Pennsylvania Avenue in Binghamton.

National Political Viewpoints

Mr. Trump is the big man in town; he claimed to own the federal shutdown, let him fix it. Hard to walk the talk.

~

The media in general reminds me of nothing more than a spoiled child, each outlet screaming louder than the other, ‘LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME”! My story is bigger than yours, “LOOK AT ME”. Whether it’s the local weather news, President Trump, whatever. Doesn’t matter if the story is true or made up, the cacophony is the same, “LOOK AT ME”! After awhile, you learn to just ignore them all!

~

We need a better education system. Too many people think Congress is supposed to give the President whatever is wanted.

~

Talk about useless. Instead of getting things accomplished, the shut-down over, and things moving, Congress, BOTH Houses, would rather spend their time wrangling over semantics and nonsense! How about they don’t get paid until things are dealt with. Watch things get done then!

~

New York City’s Mayor De Blasio is denying Asian Americans the opportunity to acces New York City’s best public schools, e.g. Magnet, Academies, and Charter schools. This is Christa McAuliffe Intermediate School PTO, Inc. et al v. De Blasio et al. De Blasio and his Social Justice Warriors place tribe above the individual. If a tribe rigorously pursues and succeeds in academic excellence, then the SJWs must fix that. They are reversing Brown vs. the Board of Education. The Fed defines ethnicity (tribe) as that with which you self-identify, e.g. Cherokee Princess Pocahontas a.k.a. E. Warren (Lib Leftist). The Federal “Standards for the Classification on Race and Ethnicity” consists of 21,000 words. Read it to believe it. Self-anointed Deity De Blasio has exhumed the Divine Right of Kings so he may assign an individual to tribes based on name or other identifiable attribute. There is no SJW respect for the minority of the individual. This Liberal tyranny includes the effete Intelligentsia of Academia. See Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard. No less than 20 different tribal associations have aligned themselves against each other, minority vs. minority. Instead of fixing the failed New York City school system, De Blasio and his union overlords choose to pit American against American and make losers of all. Where De Bozo goes, Guido Cuomo follows. In 1935, a European Country enacted the Nuremburg Laws, which excluded certain tribes from public education and purged Academia of same, including Albert Einstein. Strange the Leftist Media ignores this yet it is as significant as Brown vs. the Board of Education.

~

It’s nice to see Obama get a slap down for claiming responsibility for the Shale Revolution and Trump’s flourishing economy. Next he’ll be claiming credit for the Moon Landings.

~

I think that it is a shame that this strike in Washington has dragged this long. There are 300 million people now being affected by the stalemate, so we really don’t care about Trump’s employees being put thru the mill. He is hurting mostly his own people. After this is resolved, we better close this power of any president so it doesn’t happen again.

~

The votes in the past were for enhanced border security. It included repairing and updating existing barriers and a limited stretch of new barriers. They did NOT include a wall the length of the border.

~

Well, lookee there. It appears that an international multi-gazillionaire is funding the “Impeach Trump” movement, because he knows that when President Trump gets the barrier between Mexico and the U.S. his business and income will go down, big time. He’s slathering money around to politicians, etc., to keep a barrier from happening. Give you a new view of Chuck and Nancy?

~

TRUMP just wasn’t thinking! He should have cancelled the trip on Pelosi after they got there! How about if maybe we all just send them a “brick”? It wouldn’t take long and the wall would be up.

~

Please explain how Cuomo, a state governor, can pardon the federal offense of being an illegal alien. Or how someone in Tioga County could be subject to a New York City law. Please think things through.

~

You are entitled to believe that the money going to Iran was a bribe and somehow illegal. Believing that doesn’t make it true, however.

~

Anyone who uses public roads, approves of having municipal police and fire departments, went to public school or a state college, receives or anticipates receiving Medicare and social security, uses airports and benefits from the air traffic control system, likes having GPS, is glad radio and TV stations don’t interfere with each other, appreciates standardized electrical systems, is glad we have we have a weather radar system, appreciates having clean air and waterways, uses municipal water and sewer systems, etc. needs to understand that having those things is a result of democratic socialism and having benefitted from them should not be ranting against it.

~

It doesn’t fit the narrative the Libs would like you to hear, but due to the policies of President Trump, the U.S. has reduced our carbon emissions 35 percent. That’s more than any nation that signed the Paris Agreement regarding carbon emissions. Going to write a letter or send an email thanking President Trump? Nah, didn’t think so. To do so would exclude you from the “Hate Trump” crowd. Can’t have that.

~

“Let’s see if I have this correct” – elaborated on all the bogus media hype about how bad the nonessential federal employees are fairing under the mandated layoff. The media hype of how broke these employees are that they are resorting to going into foreclosure, bankruptcy, food banks, payday loans. The writer did not point out the fact most have the benefit of staying on insurance with no payments and are on schedule to receive credits for sick, personal and vacation time and when (not if) they go back to their jobs, there will be a retro pay paycheck waiting for them. Which to point; Of their bogus financial hardship it is NO more than the hardship for the more than 7.5 million workers who were out of any type of employment for eight-plus years, pre 2016, and now just being rectified. Nationally we now have a robust economy, which continues to grow. (The numbers are available via the Bureau of Labor reporting.) December alone shows a 300,000-plus back to the workforce. If anyone has any thoughts of “woe is the government worker” look in your own backyard for those who during this eight-year window were forced to move out of state, or those that remain are surviving on two minimal jobs and/or with the largesse of government assistance.  If ever that number of 800,000 “laid off workers” reaches anywhere near the 7.5 million people who actually lost their jobs yet found a way to pay their bills, not by missing a few full paychecks, but more like 208 – 416 zero paychecks without benefit of retro pay, one would have to believe many of those 800,000 claiming to have to file bankruptcy have bigger financial issues than can be fixed with a few missed pay checks. As it is, those who buy into these sob stories perpetrated by the media are not looking at the reality and facts.

~

This shutdown of the government and all the pain it has caused is on Donald Trump 100 percent, and everybody knows it, he owned it, he’s responsible.

~

Breaking political news. Ann Coulter should get the freedom Medal, freedom to enter bankruptcy, freedom to die from disabilities untreated, freedom to lose ones home, freedom to try to get by without a paycheck. What else is Ann Coulter responsible for? She has joined at the hip to the man in the oval office. Give us freedom from that!

~

Why do Republican politicians work against opening the government for 800,000 Americans who are starting to hurt while they can work overtime to lift sanctions against corrupt Russian businessmen? Are all the Republicans stooges of Putin?

~

Maybe one of your readers can tell me what the results were of the investigations of the Clinton Foundation and the investigations of Uranium One. The Clinton Foundation was investigated for a long time and the results, as far as I know, were never revealed.

~

Many thanks to Senator Schumer for the good job he’s doing representing the American people in Washington. The Republicans on the other hand are, for some strange reason, going all out to be stooges for Russia. Maybe they’re treasonous and traitors. The news will come out soon enough.

~

Hurray for President Trump canceling Pelosi’s sight seeing tour aboard a U.S. Government plane. Tit for tat? You bet! Hardball Mr. President, no compromise, surrender. She shall pace no more ground beyond this point. Go Trump!

~

Hey kids, do you know what time it is? It’s the Trump comedy hour! 800,000 workers will be getting paid soon, as soon as Mitch McConnell can find out what he is supposed to do next. What will Donald have him do next? I can hardly wait!

~

What would be nice is to have Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, congressmen and congresswomen and the senators donate their paychecks for the next two months to the poor federal workers. Also, the heads of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and FOX can donate their paychecks for the next two months to the so-called poor federal workers.

~

I haven’t heard what the average pay of a federal worker is. The media is avoiding what the average wage of these workers is.

~

The left wing loons are now eating crow. Buzzfeed, another fake news source posted that President Trump told his convicted attorney to lie to congress about a phony Moscow deal. Now special counsel Mueller, who is no friend of Trump, says, “Buzzfeed, you lied!” So much for the present so called journalism in the good ‘ole U.S. of A.

~

Political promise already broken, both Gillibrand and Elizabeth Warren said during November’s reelection they would not be running for president. Now I put on the news, and guess what, they’re running for president. Typical Democratic politician, who lie to get your vote, they don’t care about the American people. It’s all about them and their agenda. Vote them all out. Trump 2020!

~

Have you ever noticed that Trump and Republican congressmen always have to go back to Hillary Clinton or they have to go back to Barack Obama? Democrats on the other hand want to go forward. Vote Democrat.

~

How can we use these words that no man is above the law, but yet the sitting president of the United States of America can obstruct justice. So much for no man is above the law. It’s just another hollow phrase, just another lie.

~

If you were kidnapped in a foreign country by terrorists and they demanded money from the United States of America, the government has a policy not to pay because it would continue to happen. With Trump taking all these federal workers as hostages, why should the Democrats pay ransom to Trump? You know he’ll continue this practice. He needs to grow up. I’m glad he joined the Republicans.

~

It will be funny to see how long Gillibrand lasts on the presidential campaign trail. She’ll be gone before you know it.

~

I called last week and you didn’t put my comment in the paper so I’m calling again.

After reading the comments written in the readers write column for many years, I’ve come to one undeniable conclusion, that the leftist socialist Democrats have a far below average I.Q. I really don’t have any idea how they get through a day. They just don’t have any common sense. Please print this.

~

Trump and his wonderful advisors, Steven Miller and the snake Pence should sit on a damn dumb wall and stay there. Also add Judge Jeanine Pirro to the bunch, she could watch if there were speeders at the wall and going 112 m.p.h. Like she did in Nichols, N.Y. last summer. That was stupid. I think she belongs on the Supreme Court, do you think? Add to that Ann Coulter to the bunch, Trump and his characters are not to be trusted, ever, ever, ever.

~

About the government shutdown, if God wanted a wall he would have put up a mountain. There’s got to be another way.

~

The average wage of a federal worker is only $83,000 a year. How can live on such a small wage?

~

Somebody needs to explain to Donald Trump what I’ve always told my children. Compassion is never wasted. Donald Trump has no compassion for anybody; he cannot empathize with anybody. He’s a scary individual. He needs to be impeached.

~

The Covington Kentucky high school students were guilty of two egregious crimes by the socialist democrats and the fake news media. These students where in the Right to Life March and some wore Make America Great Again hats. Think about it, where can I get a MAGA hat around here?

~

I hope all the idiots that put Cuomo back in office are happy with their decision. He is now giving free stuff beyond measure to all the illegals in the state. That’s where your tax money is going, it’s not going to the American people. Cuomo has got to go! I don’t know why you people put him back into office. He sure didn’t get my vote this time or ever before.
