Readers’ Column for the week for January 6

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The comments relating to the physical residence of two elected officials was fact-checked, and the caller’s claim is unfounded.

So, you see in today’s paper where Waverly wants so much money for this park for the kids. Well I want to ask you who’s really going to enjoy it, and who is going to make money off of it? It certainly isn’t us old people. The young kids just hang on corners and play in the streets downtown. You have to use some common sense. Between that water system and these parks, and our old homes they are tearing down and selling, why the hell do they have to borrow money to do these little things that they’re going to make cost millions to pad a few pockets. Think about it.

This is for all the folks calling in about the Owego Apalachn School District and the lack of oversight by the board of education. We all do have a way to get a point across to the board of education, the superintendent and the school district. All we have to do is show up and vote no on everything. I realize this won’t solve the entire problem, but if we all start voting no and all of their budgets and projects are turned down, it may send a message. It may take a little bit of time but I think it will start sending a message. We also have to start utilizing the FOIL law, the freedom of information and demanding all the documentation and statistics in regards to everything they are doing. So we do have a way to wake the board of education up and next time there is an election get out and vote. Vote for anybody who is not associated with the school district in any way, shape or form for any and all open positions on the board of education and vote down every proposal the school puts forward.

I’m calling in response to the section that Senator Fred Akshar has in the current issue of the Pennysaver in regards to his pistol permit regulation survey. Here’s an idea Mr. Akshar, how about in the proposed legislation you want to put forward, you put some stipulation in there that states that the mental health records of all folks requiring or wanting to purchase a gun becomes part of the background check, because it seems to me that our biggest problem is the mental health issues and people just don’t want to deal with it. They look the other way and then they want to blame an object when in reality it’s the failure of the mental health process and services that cause most of the problem. So if we make that part of the background check and take it out from under the protected medical rules of HIPPA, you may weed out a lot of these crazies that theoretically go out and purchase firearms legally.

It’s very ironic that a coach expects loyalty and commitment from his players, both starters and reserves but yet does not show the same back to them when he breaks up a JV player or subs get very little time or none at all? Where is his loyalty to those guys?

~

I agree 100 percent with last week’s comment in the paper stating that heating oil for your house is too damn expensive, seeing how you get gasoline for about $2.35 a gallon now. Something’s wrong. It looks like runaway greed! The government, I repeat, the government if it ever does its job should look into this. It’s borderline illegal as far as I’m concerned, raping the working poor like you do, the ones who can’t qualify for HEAP. $700 for a barrel full of gas? That’s ridiculous!

~

I saw that someone had commented that there was no vote for remodeling the football field. I don’t remember voting on a project for remodeling the gymnasium for the basketball teams. Is that how we do it now? I was just wondering.

A special thank you to the Town of Berkshire for the colorful holiday street decorations that light our neighborhoods during December and January. We also want to express our appreciation to the carolers of the Congregational Church in Berkshire for sharing beautiful Christmas music the evening of Dec. 23. This musical gift is always eagerly anticipated and is a special part of our yearly celebration.

~

Thank you Cuomo for pardoning 22 illegal immigrants and murderers. That’s surely keeping us safe here in New York State.

~

I have never had an EVAP code engine problem, as my car doesn’t last 100,000 miles. What kind of car make and model lasts over 100,000 miles?

~

Why are colleges teaching courses in adulting? So-called adulting should be learned in the home. And is there even such a word as adulting?

~

I’ve lived in Van Etten for the last 34 years. It’s a great town with a lot of good people. However, it’s in New York State and I’m so sick and tired of horrible weather. The last five months, with the exception of about five days, the sky is dark gray with rain or snow. I simply can’t take it anymore. It’s extremely depressing. I’m selling my place and going to get out of here. Goodbye New York State. This is no way to live.

~

I am wondering if it is remotely possible that a hearing test and an audiologist could do damage to a person’s hearing. I’d love to know if anybody knows; if they’ve had that experience. Please respond to this column.

~

I was at a holiday party and I met a woman from the Sydney School District where Superintendent Corey Green came from and she described him as a financial disaster that didn’t follow rules and said that their district is much better off since he left. Maybe we really should look at what’s really going on down at our school.

Get involved where your voice can make a difference in your local taxes here at home. Go to your village, town, school and legislative meetings and report here to others of us that can’t be at those meetings. You have the schools waiting for the snowbirds to be gone to pass huge renovations and bragging about it. Legislators are conferring back and forth on tablets where the public can’t hear the conversations. Owego school tuition being dropped immensely but the public not being told until after the fact. I see full pages of political bashing and clashing yet what needs to be done needs to be done here, locally. Somebody needs to start watching our local hen houses because we have our own foxes that think that they are being sly.

Project 3T, take the test. 235 elected, selected and hired individuals need to choose a location to enjoy a familiar childlike experience, test taking. Location must be eligible for common core test materials since the tests are a high security limited access document. A school in an assembly or a senate district can be chosen. Those without assigned districts may select an urban school. Schools selected need to have time to order the materials. Take part in this 3T project. Contact your senator, assembly representative, comptroller, and attorney general, board of regent’s member, lieutenant governor and governor. What site have they chosen?

I grew up in a little town in Lisle, N.Y. There were 10 of us kids, we did not have TV or radio, and we used the outhouse because we had no running water in the house. We didn’t have toilet paper then so we used Sears & Roebuck catalog pages for toilet paper. We had a library in Lisle and the librarian’s name was Mrs. Walker, what a wonderful lady! She would play tic tac toe with us, she had story time every Saturday morning, we played ring around the rosy and she taught us what May baskets were. Someone would drop a May basket on the porch and would holler May basket for Blanch, then we were supposed to run and catch the boy and kiss him. She taught us little skits, such as hokey pokey, mulberry bush, and everybody in the town of Lisle would come to watch us. Then came a boxed lunch wrapped up in a shoebox and the boy who brought the box, we would have to eat with him. We played hot potato and cold potato with the librarian, also. We girls, when we were little we would play dress up and take our dollies for a walk in the carriage. When I got off the school bus every afternoon I would go and thread needles for a little old lady who was 98 years old and she would try to make homemade rugs for us people in Lisle. What a wonderful life in Lisle! I am so glad I grew up in Lisle!

This is in response to the person/persons who implied/claimed in the last two issues that a husband and wife (County Legislator and Owego Town Council member) do not live in their district, but rather in Pennsylvania. That claim is false. I have known this couple for over 20 years and have been to their home countless times. Their home is located in the Town of Owego, Tioga County, N.Y. Reminder: “Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor”.

~

Have you ever wondered what drug companies could sell their product for if they stopped the incessant advertising on TV? Speaking for myself, I get so tired of all the ads for medication for psoriasis, asthma, diabetes, etc. I could scream! Because they are so obnoxious and insistent, I would refuse them if the doctor prescribed them!

~

Looking for someone who can convert 35 mm slides to digital, leave name and phone number in this column.

~

Sad to see Nichols Fire Company and The Owego Pennysaver supporting La Familia Motorcycle Club. Make no mistake, this is a motorcycle GANG. Simple search on Facebook or Google can prove their history.

~

There are two main reasons why property taxes are so high in the Village of Owego. 1) Property taxes are used to pay for Medicaid. No other state does that. 2) Fifty percent of the parcels in the Village of Owego do not pay taxes including churches, schools, government buildings, and non-profits like the museum, the library, arts council, VFW, American Legion and the Boys and Girls Club. These amenities are valuable and serve residents from all over the area, so thank village taxpayers for subsidizing them. Mr. know it all may be dumb and naive, but at least he is not rude and nasty.

~

Have you ever noticed that Towns and Villages that receive grant money all have planning and zoning? Gee I wonder why? Part time governments get part time support from the State.

National Political Viewpoints

I don’t know what all the fuss is about with this border wall. Trump can build it if he wants to. He said the Mexicans were going to pay for it; I heard him and other Americans heard him all through the campaign. Or is that going to be like the big 35 percent tax cut he promised the middle class. One big fat lie.

~

Okay, early in the morning the old lady’s on the run. Can you imagine a president we cannot trust behind our backs and yet he gets in front of this television and tells so many lies, outright lies like the military got no raise in 10 years, but they did. He cannot talk the truth. Why do we still keep him? Think about it. If we lied like that we would go to jail. Right? Your damn right it is. Get rid of him! Think about it, another year with this jackass. There, have a wonderful Happy New Year!

~

Trump suffers some poor little rich boy syndrome.

~

This is to the Democrats or fools, one and the same, who think $5 billion is a lot of money. They seem to forget the $145 billion that Obama gave Iran in the middle of the night so they could spread terrorism and continue their nuclear program. Do they realize that $145 billion is 29 times the $5 billion? Stop crying about the money for the wall. Giving Iran the money in the middle of the night qualifies Obama as a traitor, period!

~

So okay, if Schumer and Pelosi do not want the wall, I say you vet the migrants, let those in who love our country but it is made perfectly clear from the start that there will be no government handouts. They must work for everything, as true American citizens have always done, no government handouts of any kind. I think if they were told this upfront they would think twice and stay in their own countries.

~

The mainstream media has nothing better to report on than Melania Trump’s wardrobe. That only verifies the fact that they are only extremely jealous of her and her beauty. She and Jackie Onassis are in a class act all by themselves. They truly were and are glamorous women. Why doesn’t the media comment on the fact that Melania visited our wonderful troops on Christmas day and the fact that Michelle Obama never did anything of the sort. Michelle was probably out Christmas shopping. Now that would be something that they could report on but no they won’t.

~

After reading today’s Pennysaver, in a comment called in by a less than intelligent person from Tioga County wrote about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, saying Donald Trump has never done anything wrong. Well, you’re blind or stupid and Hillary Clinton needs to be arrested for shenanigans? I think that would be funny to have the police officer come to her house to tell her she’s under arrest for shenanigans. Come on people, wake up, are you people that dumb?

~

Trump’s wife should have stood in front of the White House wearing her famous “I don’t care, do you” jacket for all the federal workers who have been out of work because of the shutdown. By the way, Trump is up to 6,420 false and misleading claims.

~

I have an idea, let Mr. Trump pay for the wall with his own money, and then Mexico can reimburse him. Problem solved.

~

To the person who wants to know what $5 billion looks like, it looks small and damn good compared to the $55 Billion per year it costs to house and take care of all of the illegal immigrants. Not to mention, thousands more are trying to cross the border at this moment, so no doubt the $55 billion will go higher. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Also, the illegal’s have more rights than the legal U.S. citizens as soon as they crash into the U.S.A. Also, the two poor little children who have recently passed after crossing the border with their parents was very sad. However, their parents are at fault for not staying where they were with those sick children and taking care of them. They are responsible in every way for their deaths. What part don’t people understand about all of this hoopla nonsense! Thank you for asking!

~

Trumpster logic: Trump didn’t go to Iraq until Tuesday so that meant that when someone said on the day before that he hadn’t gone it was a lie.

~

The parts of the government shut down are those who have not had their funding bills passed. Some have already passed, including the Department of Defense.

~

The person looking for proof that Trump has lied only has to look at his speech to the troops in Iraq where he told them the raise they were getting was 1) their first in 10 years and 2) was 10 percent. There’s two right there.

~

Interesting, and you can Google this. If the Wall is so unimportant, the Liberals can play games with it, Chucky and Nancy can grandstand to their heart’s content, then why are people contributing thousands of their own dollars toward the construction of that wall? Why are we allowing illegal’s to continue to enter our country unimpaired by background checks, etc. so we can have more of our citizens, like the young police officer in California gunned down? Why are we allowing diseases, eradicated in the U.S., and drugs to flood our country? Makes no logical sense. It’s all about votes, NOT compassion!

~

Last week’s effete Liberal caller referring to Pres. Reagan’s “tear down this wall” statement, proves Reagan had it right when he said, “It isn’t so much that liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so many things that aren’t so.” Reagan referred to the Berlin Wall. It made Berlin a prison to keep good citizens in their utopian Socialist state. Our border is to keep bad people out! Good vs. Bad and In vs. Out. On Dec. 27, legal immigrant and naturalized citizen Roni Singh was murdered by seven illegal aliens (criminals all). He left behind a wife and 5-month-old son. He paid taxes and at least four of the seven murderers were on welfare. Is there any limit on the blood Libs are extracting in order to flood the nation with their future-voting block? Libs amend the Constitution if you want to turn our nation into a Banana Republic, like those from which the illegal’s run.

~

Just when you think Mr. Trump couldn’t go any lower. He tells a seven year old there’s no Santa Claus. Is there no end?

~

Ninety years ago a Republican congress and an incompetent President, drunk with power, instituted trade barriers turning the roaring twenties into the great depression. History does indeed have a way of repeating itself.
