In April, Spencer Police Department K9 Sig suffered a work-related injury. After several weeks of conservative treatments and testing at the Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine facilities in Annapolis Maryland, it was determined that Sig had received a serious spinal injury that required surgery.

The Spencer Police canine unit is completely funded by Investigator McCulskey and through community donations. As the cost of Sig’s treatment, medications, and surgery approached $8,000, they reached out to the Southern Tier Police Canine Association and the National Police Dog Foundation for financial assistance.

The canine association was able to share proceeds from monies received from the Lake Hopatcong Open Water Swim Festival, and the National Police Dog Association provided a grant in the amount of $4,000 towards Sig’s medical bills.

It was reported that Sig’s surgery was successful and he has returned to full duty. The team recently completed New York State and Eastern Police Canine Association narcotics recertification and is continuing Sig’s physical therapy.

The Spencer Police Department would like to thank the Southern Tier Police Canine Association, Dr. Ron Dalzell and the National Police Dog Foundation, Dr. Sue Yanoff and Lin McGonagle of the Animal Performance and Therapy Center for their continued support.
