Folk Art, Flint Knapping ‘Gathering’ at Bement-Billings Farmstead

Folk Art, Flint Knapping ‘Gathering’ at Bement-Billings Farmstead

A free Flint Knapping “Gathering” will be held Nov. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum located on Route 38 in Newark Valley. The “Gathering” will be lead by Flint Knapper Mike McGrath.

Novice, beginner and advanced are invited to work together in this shared interest group. The public is also invited to stop in and explore topics with attendees such as how to locate resources, flint materials, and workshops available.

This is an opportunity for those interested in working on their flint knapping skills to work in a group environment. Each participant brings own flint, tools (if they have them) and projects. Bring related projects to display and discuss.

The ultimate goal is to promote a community of flint knappers and preserve these ancient skills for generations to come.

This event is free and open to the public and will be held inside the Welcome Center at the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum.

The Newark Valley Historical Society hosts the gathering. Program is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization program, administered by Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

The “Gathering” is free; however, please call to reserve a seat by Nov. 9 for planning purposes by calling Ginnie at 642-9974.
