The Owego Volleyball Girls Team will be participating in Owego’s First Friday event, planned for Friday, Sept. 7 beginning at 6 p.m. Provided photo.

The Historic Owego Marketplace will place Owego Youth front and center during Owego’s First Friday as they celebrate Back to School week.

Owego’s First Friday will take place on Friday, Sept. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. in the historic Village of Owego. September is a time of transitions, and there is no transition more meaningful than the start of a new school year.

Enjoy live performances from Owego Academy music students, a lively community game of Volleyball hosted by the Owego Volleyball Girls Team at Draper Park, or stop by and shoot some hoops with the Owego Apalachin Basketball Club.

Young artists will also be in action at the “Imagination Station”, presented in part by the Tioga Arts Council. Activities are fun for children and adults of all ages.

The Owego-Apalachin Basketball Club exists to offer the children of the Owego-Apalachin Central School District the opportunity to play organized basketball at a competitive and developmental level through local leagues and statewide through AAU Basketball. Furthermore, it seeks to promote the game of basketball, offer quality coaching and instruction and work directly towards the goals of the District’s K thru 12 philosophy. Their primary focus will be on teaching and developing the fundamentals of basketball, improving individual and team skills along with a strong emphasis on values such as character development, teamwork, discipline, respect and sportsmanship.

The Owego Volleyball Program is built on pride and tradition. Their success on and off the court dates back many years. Athletes work really hard every day to not only be better volleyball players, but better people too. This group of girls has proven that they have what it takes to persevere through any challenge as long as they stick together. Their dedication and work ethic doesn’t just show on the court, it shows off the court as well. They are all great students and are always willing to help make our community a better place.

The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM) is also grateful and honored to announce a grant award from the Floyd J. Hooker Foundation. The Floyd J. Hooker foundation has a mission that is clear and simple: “To benefit the children of Tioga County.”

HOM is pleased to be able to facilitate this mission by donating to each of the Youth organizations represented during Owego’s First Friday event. In addition to the performance and activities made available by this grant during First Friday, each and every HOM produced event will host youth activities made possible by the Floyd J. Hooker Foundation.

HOM also announced that with generous support from Lockheed Martin, a donation was made to the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth STEM Program. 4-H is the largest national positive youth development and youth mentoring organization. It empowers six million youth in partnership with 110 universities, including Cornell University. 4-H research-based programs are accessible in many ways such as via 4-H clubs and teen leadership groups. Programs offered include STEM education, healthy living, and citizenship and leadership development.

Owego’s First Friday is about community, and HOM believes that investing in today’s youth will build a stronger community tomorrow.

The First Friday Brochure and Passport will be in full force, with their Featured Sponsor, The Owego Kitchen, offering a $50 dollar gift certificate as the passport prize.

They encourage participants to visit the Tioga County History museum to view their special exhibit of old school photos, and school bells from Owego History. The Museum will be open special hours for First Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m., and is an included stop on the First Friday Passport.

The First Friday Passport will be available for pickup at participating locations beginning Thursday, Sept. 6.
