A good night of weather at Champion Speedway led to a well-run program that started on time and concluded by 10:15 p.m. last Saturday. The track has had rain most race nights this season that has either delayed or canceled the program.

There was a nice turnout of speedway riders and ATV’s and Trikes on hand. The speedway program used the Olympique format for the first time at the track, which is an earned handicapping format. Riders started with a scratch heat and then the winner would have to come from the 30 yard line the next time out, 2nd place would come from the 20, 3rd from the 10 and last from the zero.

Three rounds of racing took place with the top four going to the scratch main and the next four to the last chance. The winner of the last chance would gain the last berth in the main. Those five riders, plus the 2nd place rider in the scratch last chance, would also take part in the evening’s handicap main.

Len McBride, Casey Donholt, and Adam Mittl all tied for top scorer with 11 points each in the Olympique format. Donholt won the coin toss for first gate pick and chose gate 5 where there was a nice dirt line for traction.

Donholt put his Sammy Tanner Arai Helmets sponsored Jawa out front off the start and held off several hard charges from Adam Mittl of Endicott, who was riding his Justice Bros / Arai Helmets / Scott’s Headers / Tanks Auto / Oury Grips sponsored GM to take his 5th Main Event win of the season.

McBride, who resides in Windsor, was having a great night, took a solid 3rd. Donholt, of Port Crane, would also take the Handicap main event win.

Young Mason Higley from Towanda, Pa. was victorious in the D-2 feature. Lonni Whitmore of Nichols added to his collection of Quad Pro wins while Jimmer Ulrich won again in the Quad Am Final.

The next event at Champion Speedway is Aug. 11, the Larry and Kathy McBride Memorial. The facility is also looking to possibly add an event Aug. 18 in place of the race, which was rained off July 14. Keep watch at the champion speedway websit, www.speedwaybikes.com, for information.

The New York State Championship is planned for Aug. 25.
