Opening day of the Tioga County Fair on Tuesday was jam packed with action as the rides opened in the afternoon, and then the Dash for Cash event entertained guests and brought horse lovers together for some competition. But the entertainment was cut short at about 8:45 p.m. when storms blew through the area.

But there is no need to worry, as the fair continues through Saturday, offering three nights of demo derby action, live entertainment, 4-H shows, crafts and wares, with Midway and carnival flair.

And the threat of a shower or two didn’t stop fairgoers from checking into the Tioga County Fair on Tuesday to enjoy the many attractions and features offered for one gate admission price of $10.

Gillette Shows, the new ride company for this year’s fair, had things set up and running in time for those taking advantage of the “pay one price” gate fee. With close to a dozen rides set up, organizers were pleased to see the turnout tonight, and looked at the rides lit up, noting that it looked like the fair again.

For the board members, the all-inclusive price was the right thing to do.

“We want to make the fair affordable for everyone, and we want to bring the community back to the fair,” said Jonathan Marks, Fair Board president.

Andy Fagan, director of Cornell Cooperative Extension in Tioga and Chemung Counties, was at the fair earlier in the day and emphasized the efforts of 4-H as well.

“The fair is about the animals and exhibits,” said Fagan, adding, “These kids work hard all year long.”

Marcus Milner, Town of Tioga resident that arrived at the fair with his children, Marilyn, Damon and Mitchell, came early, but planned to return at 5 p.m. on Tuesday when the rides opened.

The Moose Lodge and the 4-H Food and Dairy Bar were cooking up food throughout opening day, and the concessions had arrived and were open.

Also, earlier in the day on Tuesday, Marks gathered with dignitaries and members of the media to cut a ribbon, officiating the opening of this year’s fair.

Senator Fred Akshar, who attended the event, wanted to show his support for agriculture in the area.

“We’re here supporting the fair,” said Senator Akshar, adding, “It’s only ten dollars to get in, so come on down.”

Tomorrow evening will feature the demolition derby, and the gate admission remains at $10, which includes the derby, and the rides will open at 2 p.m.
