During the month of April, The Owego Pennysaver hosted a logo contest for the upcoming Strawberry Festival in Owego, planned for June 15 and 16.

With over two-dozen entries submitted, approximately five judges, to include several artists, took to the difficult task of selecting a logo that would represent and embody the theme for this year’s festival, Strawberry Jamboree.

By the end of the day, however, the judges selected two winners – one for first place, and then an honorable mention.

Winning first place for her logo is Terry Mead, who grew up in Apalachin and went to Vestal Central Sr. High. Earning an honorable mention is Waverly High School student Alicia Hadamik. Both received prize money for their logo.

Hadamik was one of 12 entries submitted by the Waverly High School’s art teacher, Rebecca Lantz. Hadamik’s logo, along with the others submitted, will be displayed in the window at The Owego Pennysaver, located on Front Street in Owego. The entries will remain up throughout the festival in June.

As for Mead, her logo seemed to bring the strawberries to life, and was the best representation of this year’s theme.

In a recent interview, Mead stated that she has been cartooning since she was a child.

“I started out copying other’s work until eventually developing my own style,” stated Mead, adding, “Inspiration came from Walt Disney and Charles Schulz, among others. Cartoons have always made me smile. I try to convey fun, happiness, and outright joy in my creations to bring a smile to other’s faces.”

And Mead is no stranger to creating designs. Now living in Florida with her husband Timothy, an Owego native, Mead also creates logos and other graphics to benefit a good cause.

She stated, “I generally draw for the fun of it for myself, but also work with pet adoption organizations creating logos, flyers, and other graphics for them. For example, I created the logo for the Hounds and Heroes Program through Awesome Greyhound Adoptions in West Palm Beach. They train retired greyhounds to be service dogs for deserving veterans.”

Mead also designed a greyhound coloring book that she has customized for greyhound adoption groups.

As for the Strawberry Festival, Mead says she always attended when she was living in New York, and stated that it’s one of the things that she misses about the area.

“It is always a great, enjoyable, fun event that brings the community together,” Mead added.
