From the Mayor’s Desk

From the Mayor’s DeskMayor Michael Baratta III.

The last few weeks have been busy, as it seems were finally quickly switching to warmer weather. Your Department of Public Works is gearing up to start doing the summer activities of mowing and fixing our streets up. Operation Clean Sweep and the street cleaner has the streets looking better, May is also an Operation Clean Sweep month.

The DPW has switched the sticks and twigs, leaves and yard waste pickup day to Mondays as most residents work in their yards over the weekend and then the piles sat there until Friday when they would get picked up; now they are picked up Mondays. Remember you do not need to bag leaves, we have the ability to suck them up with a vacuum type system so residents just have to rake them to the curb.

There are several exciting things going on in our village we should all be proud of. The Village board is hard at work on next year’s budget. Watch the Village website for draft versions of next year’s budget and information on public hearings.

Trustee VanHousen and I just returned from the NYCOM (New York Conference of Mayors) annual meeting and spring training conference. We learned about topics like budgeting and the ins and outs of the open meetings law, which is the code we run our board meetings by. We plan to bring what we learned back and apply it in our village.

The Owego Police department has been using their Facebook page (if you haven’t liked it yet give it a search) to showcase the great job they are doing keeping our village a safe place to live and raise a family.

I plan to hold office hours not during normal business hours to accommodate residents that work full time or are not available during the days. Watch for future announcements of when they will be held.
