Readers’ Column for the week of April 15, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Tim Tebow is coming to Binghamton. Big deal! Yawn, yawn, cricket noise.

~

It’s very clear that it was the plan all along to close the home of our special needs people in order to convert Broome Developmental Center to an opioid rehab center. This is a disgrace! Broome County priorities are mixed up. The plan, the paperwork and the conversion went through in record time. This goes right along with the Democrats who support open borders. Do they not realize open borders contribute to the opioid mess? This world is truly mixed up!

So now the Broome County Library in Binghamton is known as the Jeffery P. Graham Library. Why do we names things after politicians? I’m still going to call it the Binghamton library.

NYSEG electric bills are supposed to increase about $6 more starting in May.

Tim Tebow, ho hum? Tim Tebow will tell you he is a man of deep faith, he is not a savior but an athlete that is trying to play a sport he loves. He already had his first Rumble Ponies at bat. How do I know? I saw it on ESPN. He will draw more people to Binghamton to watch baseball and also help our suffering economy. He puts us, for now, on the sports map. Enjoy and embrace what he brings to the area. Good luck to the Rumble Ponies, go see Tim Tebow and enjoy!

I have responses to two callers who called in for the April 8 column. Number one, yes, absolutely. Calls to this column are being left out. I have called with sensible comments, which are not personal attacks or laced with profanity, etc., and they are never published anymore. This column used to be the page I turned to first. Now it is boring! No local comments of interest. We are losing our freedom of speech in this country my friend and this is a small example. Number two, to the other caller who was complaining about the board. If you want the new mayor and new board members to help you, show up at the meetings and support them. They are still outnumbered by the old guard.

If the weather we have been having were a movie, it would be titled, The Winter That Would Not Die. That makes me think of a bad horror movie.

~

The section of the national political viewpoints in this column has, for the most part, turned into a trash Trump section. They ought to put that section in a separate insert, that way I wouldn’t have to look at it at all. I could just toss it away.

~

Wow, it doesn’t take much to realize that the Pennysaver is a Republican rag. You’ve got one view, and one view only.

We have two items we would like to give away free of charge. A set of wooden fold down attic stairs, they have never been used, still in box, and a portable clothes washer with instruction manual. It is good for doing small loads at the sink in an area where there is no washer hook up. Stored indoors and as far as we know it works. Located in the Berkshire area, call (607) 657-8035.

I was wondering if any Tioga County residents have been seeing strange lights in the sky late at night lately.

What’s going on with the U.S. Postal mail delivery? I mailed a check from the box in front of the post office that was never delivered or returned. It had the correct postage and return address on it. I also didn’t receive my phone bill, which made the payment late. A substitute mailman delivered an order we placed. He knew where he had left it, but the person denied getting it. I was told to just order another one. It was over $200 and we’re just to let it go at that? Of course, we paid the second one, along with the first one. The post office did absolutely nothing about it. I didn’t dare send my income tax payment by regular mail and spent $10.00 to send it by certified mail. Who knows if that will make any difference or not.

Please refer to the information posted on the front of the shed when donating to the St. Pauly Textile shed at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Apalachin. Thank you for donating items that we can use in tied plastic bags, not in cardboard boxes. And, please, NO household goods. Thank you for your generosity in supporting the shed, which helps so many. More information can be found at www.stpaulytextile.com/.

I’m writing in response to the individual who continues to comment and seems to be uneducated about the topic of coyote hunting; hopefully this will clear some things up. The coyotes actually do not have pups during the hunting season, so the idea that they are ambushed and forced away from their pups is false. The hunting season closes when it does to prevent this from happening, a true hunter or outdoorsman would know this. The woods that we hunt may be private, but we do have permission from those who own the woods. Though you refer to it as “your hill,” the very small piece of land that you actually own is not of interest to us as it is mostly pasture and not woods. The dogs do indeed go where the scent takes them, however, they are absolutely allowed by law to do so (a copy of the hunting rules and regulations can be found on the DEC’s website). The use of GPS is so we can accurately track and manage the dogs to prevent them from entering yards or horse pastures, like you previously described. The incident about the housedog being shot is unfortunate, however, nobody from our group was involved.

This past Wednesday, 46-MPH winds knocked out power to many. Homes here got too cold and NYSEG refused to answer the phone! Their recording said go to their website. A transmission line between Main and the transformer station at the corner of Beecher and Mt. View was knocked down. Look at it from Mt. View. One of a row of large pines blew onto it. The potential for this outage was blatantly foreseeable and preventable. It shall happen again and soon. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, unless it is at your expense and inconvenience. NYSEG does not do preventative maintenance. For the repair, NYSEG brought four bucket trucks to the scene, used one and parked three, for the entire day! The six men from these three bucket trucks were needed for this repair. These trucks could have been restoring power to others! In order to save a penny, NYSEG’s policy of no preventive maintenance, refusal to provide any human point of contact, and no contingency for bad weather is simply unethical. What would happen if this were the dead of winter and winds were 56-MPG, as in Chenango County, rather than a mild 46-MPH here? Titan of industry and NYSEG CEO J. Torgerson was paid $9,626,578 in 2016 of which $7,607,345 was bonuses. Trees keep growing and future outages shall be longer due to more damage from overgrown trees and inadequate resources to repair. Should you wait for power or get your newborn out of the house before all the hotels are full? NYSEG, STOP REFUSING TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE.

How many people think there is no such thing as a leash law? On my cul-de-sac of six homes (one vacant, one with no dogs, and ourselves with leashed puppy) there are three homes that don’t believe their dogs should be on a leash. Half our neighborhood has dogs running loose.  We have to clean up other dogs’ business in OUR lawn, and it’s not right! “Be careful playing in your own yard kids, don’t want you tracking poops in the house.”  I have to tell visitors, “Beware of the neighbors unleashed dogs when coming in.” One dog got aggressive with my father. NOT COOL! “Watch for the neighbors dogs so OUR puppy (which is leashed in OUR yard) don’t get bitten.” My family shouldn’t have to deal with this CRAP! Literally. Put your dogs on a leash people. WE DO! IT’S THE LAW!

National Political Viewpoints

Hear the good news? Mueller is closing in on Trump! It’s about time that orange skin man gets what’s coming to him. I am so sick of these rich people thinking they can buy and sell anybody and are above the law. He’s nothing but trouble and he’s trying to set this country up as his own little personal dictatorship.

~

Donald Trump is not going to go face to face with Robert Mueller because Donald Trump is a bully and a coward. He is not going to deal with somebody of integrity and intelligence because he has neither of those characteristics.

~

Trump says efforts to get at him are witch hunts. Everybody knows what happened to the witches.

The senate and congress had the head of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, testify about Facebook this week. The lawmakers showed their lack of technology in the questioning of Zuckerberg. Luckily the lawmakers have their staff that do their work and write the laws for them. Zuckerberg had to leave the meeting with the lawmakers, laughing to himself at the questions rendered when it came to technology.

I was wondering if anybody out there could clarify this for me. With all these shootings, people getting blood on each others hands, political people, the NRA getting blamed, Republicans getting blamed, or if you are just a supporter of gun rights. My question is how are abortions being done? Whose fault is that? Do they have blood on their hands? The doctors, the clinics, the people that believe in abortions, and the Democrats that believe in abortions? They have way more blood on their hands. Millions of babies were put down. So clarify gun shooting or abortion. Are they the same or are they different? Explain the difference to me. Again, I called this in but it never got put in. I want to know the answer to it so if you folks could tell me so, I can clear my conscience. Who is the worst criminal with more blood on their hands?

~

Trump likes bad people. Jeanine Pirro goes to Trump’s Mar a Lago estate in Florida. Bolton, the war mongerer, goes to the White House and Pruitt, who cost the American people millions is bad for the environment and clean air. Get all the bums out already! This is bad.

~

Recent news has a mother killing her 7-year-old son with a kitchen knife. She had recently been hospitalized for mental health problems. Where is the outrage? Why aren’t our students marching to protest knives? It’s very sad that today’s young kids do not see what’s really wrong with our world.

~

How refreshing! A president protecting people by sending the National Guard to our southern border along with ending Obama’s ridiculous catch and release. Thank you Mr. Trump!

~

I see nothing wrong with the teenagers marching. At least they got their point across and I stand up for Governor Cuomo and I praise God for him; and at least he’s listening and he’s hearing what the teens have to say.

~

If it is even true that Mr. Trump had any affairs, he was not president of the United States at the time. There in lies the difference. Every day citizens have affairs every day of the week.

~

People like Jimmy Kimmel think it’s cool to go on TV and make fun of President Trump, but if someone were to go on TV and make fun of Obama, the mainstream media and celebrities would consider it sacrilegious. They don’t know what the word respect means, sad to say.

~

I’d just like to say I’m a little older than Mr. Trump. Spoiled brats like he is that can’t get their own way; I think they’ve got him now. He’s going to get it.

~

I’m not certain, but I think Sarah Huckabee Sanders is the daughter of Mike Huckabee, a minister/politician. Now that’s a combination! Apparently he’s never taught his daughter about breaking one of the commandments about lying. She ain’t even any good at it. I don’t know who lied more, Kelly Ann or Miss Huckabee Sanders. Trump’s going to go down. Down, down, down!

~

There is a huge difference between Slick Willy’s affair with Monica and Donald Trump’s affair with Stormy Daniels. Donald Trump was not the president at time of the alleged affairs, where as Clinton was. It’s called an imbalance of power and Monica couldn’t give consent, much like a teacher having an affair with a student. Trump may be an opportunist, but bubba is a sexual predator and rapist.

~

Let me see if I have this correct. Bill Clinton has sex in the Oval Office with an intern, supposedly consensual, has sex with multiple women outside the Oval Office, some NOT consensual, but that’s no problem because it didn’t interfere with his job as “president”. President Trump MAY have had an affair with Ms. Stormy Daniels ten years ago, it was consensual, but THAT’S a huge problem. What’s wrong with this picture? How about we examine the sex lives, past and present of those bringing charges and see how they stack up.

American farmers voted in droves for Donald Trump. In return they got the cancellation of the Trans-Pacific trade act, which opened Japan to tariff- free beef and pork imports. Then he sided with insurance companies to deny their families’ health insurance. He repealed Obama’s clean air rules, which had spawned the entire fracking boom. Next came steel import tariffs, which are sure to increase their machinery cost and finally, he forced China into a trade war, which will devastate American farm exports and, most likely, lead to inflation and perhaps a recession. Did farmers really think that the son of a New York slumlord, who never worked a day in his life, would be their friend?

~

Arnold Schwarzenegger was on TV recently. He said something quite profound. He stated, “The people have spoken and they voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump to be their President. It’s up to us to honor and support that choice.”
