A congressional candidate recently took running for office literally, as he launched his campaign. Ian Golden, candidate for Congress in New York’s 23rd district, completed an over 400-mile tour on foot across the sprawling upstate district, which encompasses 11 counties and a geographic region the size of New Jersey. The district wide trek took 30 days to complete.
Golden traveled across the district on foot, visiting various community events, local farms, restaurants and other businesses.
The campaign states there were house parties and meet and greets taking place three or four times a week. The goal, Golden stated, was to meet with local residents on their terms.
“This was about getting out from behind the screen, really taking the time to listen and connect. We wanted to get out there and have those discussions about the concerns of the people throughout the district, regardless of party affiliation,” Golden said.
Continuing to build momentum at the completion of the run on foot, Golden won the district wide straw poll organized by the Western counties in the district. The eight democratic candidates seeking the nomination participated in a caucus style event held in Randolph, N.Y. The event was organized to give voters an early snapshot of how the race is shaping up. Golden finished with 30 percent of the overall vote total.
