Readers’ Column for the week of Dec. 11, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

I have read that The Village of Owego is considering lowering the speed limit to 25 MPH. At one time villages were forbidden to set a village-wide limit below 30 MPH, so I’m wondering if the law changed.

I salute the brave ones, the ones who stood up to power in Standing Rock, North Dakota! I celebrate with you! Shame on the mass news media, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC for their almost non-existent coverage of this story! You have sold your integrity and are no longer reliable sources.

Today is Dec. 7, a date that should never be forgotten. This is the date when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and killed about TWO THOUSAND United States service personnel. I did not see one person demonstrating against that dastardly incident today. I would like to know where all the people are who demonstrate each August because the U.S. bombed Hiroshima. One is no better than the other. I thank President Harry Truman for saving one million and me from being cannon fodder had he not prevented the invasion of Japan.

There is another dead deer down in the ditch on the corner of Day Hollow Road and Gaskill Road; near the paper box area. Thanks for removing it so in the future there will be less of a chance of flooding.

Does Tioga County really need a squad of Apache gunships to round out the compliment of Chinook Helos? Seems unnecessary for that level of war machine to be rattling around our small backwater.

There are people having second thoughts about voting for Trump. One comment in wide circulation is that instead of draining the swamp he is adding alligators.

When are we going to learn that usually when the winner is left up to humans then it pays to know people in high places. Two cases in point from this weekend; Matsuyama wins a golf tournament and a million bucks while Woods shoots 78. Woods gets 99 percent of the press write-up. Penn State beats a very tough Ohio State team and guess who gets in the final four for the big bucks? Favoritism beats quality most times.

Sunday, Dec. 4, the movement for indigenous sovereignty had a monumental victory when the Army Corps of Engineers announced it would not grant an easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline to drill under the Missouri River. We know this is not a permanent victory and rerouting the pipeline to another community does not solve the urgent need to mitigate climate change. However, as Doug Good Feather says, “This is the beginning of the healing from the addiction – the addiction to oil, the addiction to consumerism, the addiction to that lifestyle which leaves you strung out, feeling miserable and lonely.” – Doug Good Feather

I agree – the people with the sign in Candor have every right to express themselves. That is what free speech is all about. The protesters had every right to express their views also. A sidewalk is a public thoroughfare, as is the road. There was no talk of a “near accident” when the police were called, just that there were protesters marching in front of their place. If these people want to “dish it out”, they have to be able to take it too. Their signs were very mean spirited; are you really surprised that decent people found them offensive and called them out on it? A lot more of us than just the protesters felt the signs were very nasty and crass; a simple Trump sign in the yard would not have elicited the same feeling. But this is the new normal; under Donald Trump nastiness and incivility have been given a free pass.

Let’s see if I grasp this correctly. Hillary said she wouldn’t challenge the election. She hasn’t. Jill Stein has. So given that, all Hillary wants is to have her campaign observe the counting. This makes Hillary a liar. Sorry, but I’m having trouble following the logic here. Can someone please explain it better?

The development of the Town of Nichols website is expensive at $19,000 – $19,700. Local taxpayers should ask a member of the Planning Board why this is so expensive. No bids were received since the cost is under $20,000. The job is rumored to be performed by a member of the Town’s appointed positions. Hopefully this website will provide honest transparency of the Town’s business. In the past, the Town Board was not in favor of a website. Since no local Town residents attend the Town’s two monthly public meetings, this site could be helpful for the people with limited mobility and of course a COMPUTER with access to the WEB to see WHAT’S UP with Town business.

Okay Republicans, its your time to show us what you’ve got. You have complained about Obama Care for seven years. Let’s see how you are going to provide affordable health care for us all.

~

I don’t know if the Candor people with the signs called the Sheriff also, but I know I did. I called because of the accident the two people caused.

As a landowner and taxpayer I am tired of deer hunters thinking that all property is theirs to hunt on. There are hunters that don’t own property, but tramp all over property belonging to others. My message to the deer hunters is this; buy some property and pay the taxes – then you can hunt.

Just as predicted, over 50,000 illegal aliens per day are flooding across the Mexican border with nobama’s blessings, knowing that Donald Trump will soon stop this insanity. The FBI still can’t make up its mind if the latest Somalia attack on U.S. Citizens was an act of terror, Trump should clean house on the FBI leadership and also Homeland Security. Another Socialist Marxist college president refused to fly the American flag. Jesse Jackson, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, Nobama, and fools like Colin Kaepernick eulogize the death of the despicable dictator Fidel Castro. These people are a disgrace to the patriotic Americans who support and fight for the U.S.A. Go Trump!

~

It’s not only the Town of Owego Supervisors that messed up this year; it’s the Candor Town Supervisor also. I think we should remember the next time it comes up at election, to rethink putting those people back in there.

~

I just want to remind everyone that our new President Elect Donald Trump is human too, like the rest of us, so don’t believe everything he tells you. He’s also a sinner like the rest of us. Have a Merry Christmas and hopefully a Happy New Year. May God Bless!

~

Our congratulations to the Newark Valley football team and undefeated State Champions. Way to go! Many thanks also to the coaches, families and fans.

Question, are you Trump lovers hard of hearing or just plain brainwashed? Don’t you ever think anything of all the lies he tells? Everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie or a fabricated story! When are you people going to wake up? He’s a second Hitler!

To the woman whose son lost gloves visiting Santa at the Owego Elks, I believe we found them. Please call the Elks at 687-1039 and leave your name, phone number, identify the gloves, and we will be happy to get them to your son.

Apparently the person defending the 90 year old doesn’t know the difference between a Republican and Democrat. If Democrats had their way we’d all be speaking Spanish and overrun by illegals from Mexico. I agree the 90 year old has seen a lot of history, but that by itself does not make her speech gospel. And as far as Trump not doing well, he’s already saved 1,100 jobs from leaving the country, that’s more than Obama ever did! Obama said there was nothing he could do! But he did do something, he wasted $800 billion on a stimulus package and $500 million on Solyndra and bailing out General Motors, and then he let them get away with not paying the government back $10 million. He knows how to waste money, that’s something he does know how to do.

So now some Democrats in Congress have vowed to hinder Donald Trump’s attempts to right all the wrongs put forth by our current inept administration. Why would they make such a statement without even hearing his proposal? The reason, it is what is wrong with Washington and exactly why Trump won this election. Clinton would have delivered to the American people so much more of the same bologna. Still celebrating over a huge Trump win!

~

Obama making a deal to have fighter jets built in India. What a thoughtful guy! Sure shows how much he really cares about the American people and their jobs. These jets could and should be built in the U.S.A. Just another deal Donald Trump will have to correct. This current administration has surely left Donald Trump no time to waste!

~

Let me thank the two nice couples with four precious children who surprised us by taking care of our bill Sunday. We will follow your lead and do the same. Merry Christmas and God bless you all!

~

It’s amazing and I’m in awe, Trump is on his Thank You America Tour and is still bringing in thousands of people into his audience. Why couldn’t Hillary bring in more than 300 while campaigning this summer? The only time her audience was filled to capacity was when Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi were singing. The American people sent a powerful message and they elected Donald Trump. We can only go up from here. Looking forward to the future under his leadership. Thank you to the American people!

Today is the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. May we all stop, reflect, and remember lives lost. May we continue to remember and always thank our service men and women for their service. We all need to remember freedom is not free. Hopefully the flag burners and the kneelers of the National Anthem will wake up.

~

Follow the news. Are you Trump voters ready for the Trump steamroller? House Speaker Ryan says that aid to the poor is counterproductive because it undermines the incentive for poor people and the middle class to work. They make it clear they want to cut back benefits like Medicaid and the ACA and privatize Medicare, as well as give cuts to Social Security all the while directing large tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. What’s new with these Republicans? Are you confident about your recent vote?

~

There’s a public service ad about elder abuse from the Broome County Office of the Aging on TV and it shows a woman saying hurtful things. That ad really demonstrates the power of words. Words are containers for power. They can either build up or they can tear down. The choice is ours.

For those of you that missed last Friday’s lighting of the holiday lights in downtown Owego, you are poorer for it. It was nice to see people turn out on a cold and damp evening and enjoy themselves. The crowded small shops, live entertainment, warm refreshments and fireworks were all awesome. Proud of you, Owego.

~

I heard there is a field of Christmas trees lit up on the south side. Where is this?
